Today we’d like to introduce you to Syncletica Maestas and Aida Soria.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Syncletica and Aida. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
We started as a dare. Fashion Week San Diego was looking for designers back in 2012 and we decided to go for it! We do not have a background in design, just our love of the beach so we were unsure as to whether we would get chosen. When we found out we did, there was no turning back, and since then we have continued to keep moving forward.
We have gone on to show in New York Fashion week, were named “Top Latina Designers to watch out for” in Cosmo Latina, have been featured in British Vogue this past October and have been involved in numerous projects. We have been determined to just keep moving forward.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been a difficult journey for us. Most of our hurdles have been finding dependable LOCAL factories to work with. We have literally gone door to door looking for reliable vendors. As of today we are proud to say that we have been able to keep all of our production in San Diego County.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Hola Swim – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We make swimsuits and sell them directly via our website and storefront. We specialize in streetwear inspired swimwear. Many of our pieces double as bodysuits that can be worn under jeans, skirts, etc. We are proud that we have been able to produce locally. We have in the past looked elsewhere, Los Angeles, Bali and even India to produce, but thru our experience have found that it is and will always be our goal to employ and support San Diego business. We believe that our swimwear is unique in the sense that we are unique. There are very few streetwear inspired swimwear, let alone, Mexican American woman owned swimwear companies. We do not have model to follow. A lot of our inspiration comes from the communities we grew up in, Barrio Logan, and Shelltown.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We plan to expand our business now that we have our production set. We intend to grow our website and offer more products outside of swimwear to sell. We have also begun production on a line of men’s board shorts.
