Today we’d like to introduce you to Tan Rose.
Hi Tan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Art is something that’s been a part of my life since I was young. It’s been a way for me to express myself and cope with the things going on in life. It’s taken years and some support from my family to get me to finally start my art career. It wasn’t something I originally thought of for myself. I planned to be a web developer or an art therapist in recent years, but I keep going back to art because it’s the one thing that makes me the happiest in life. But I’m glad to say this year I plan on focusing on my art more.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road in the slightest. Between quitting my job as a web developer to just trying to find where I fit in the art world, my mental health struggles and how I should go about marketing myself as an artist have been quite the challenge. However, I’ve learned that everything is a learning opportunity and I’m happy to continue to learn and grow as an artist. Patience is key and so is persistence, so I look forward to all the challenges and accomplishments that are coming my way.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Most of my pieces are paintings, and I dabble in all the mediums: watercolor, oil, and acrylic paint. I hope to expand into sculpture more this year. I like the idea of slowing down and taking my time to build a three-dimensional piece of art. I really admire sculptors and their ability to create their works.
I specialize in colorful fantasy portraits, my main focus being black women. I really like representing those who look like me in a fantasy setting because it’s not something I’ve seen very often, and I love the fantasy genre and the freedom of creating characters that can look however you want It’s something that brings me a lot of joy when I finish a piece.
I’m most proud of just putting myself out there and trying different things throughout my art journey. Whether that’s a new medium like oil paint or signing up to be in an art exhibition. It’s not easy to put your art out there for others to see and judge, and I’m happy that I’m trying.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up.
Some of my favorite childhood memories are spending time with my dad and watching cartoons. He’s the reason I love cartoons and anime as much as I do.
