Meet Tasha Dabek of Elite Mermaids

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tasha Dabek.

Tasha, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My life has always revolved around the arts. Since age 4, I have been training in the visual and performing arts: Everything from ballet, modern dance, acting, music, and sculpture/painting, etc.

I graduated from San Diego State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Theater, Television and Film and a minor in Dance, and I have worked on several feature films and television series both acting, and behind the scenes.

I’ve always used my imagination to create stories and characters, and with my extensive training in dance and theater production, it was just a very natural inkling to create a business that revolved around these things that I love to do and which I am best at doing.

The first time I realized my passion for performance and training could serve me as a real business was when one of my award-winning dance pieces got booked as the main show for the grand opening of a night-club. I was under age, so I couldn’t even go to it myself! I had to hire 18-year-old dancers to teach them the choreography so they could do the show.

I realized I had a passion for this and continued creating “solo” performance characters for special events and began promoting myself.

Along with my lifetime of training as a dancer and actor, I have always been a strong and skilled swimmer, so Mermaid characters were just a very natural next-step for me, and soon enough I was booking so many events as a mermaid that I couldn’t do them all myself!

I began to hire and train other talented, professional, and skilled, performers in order to fill the demand… and that’s when I established Elite Mermaids – The leading mermaid entertainment company for special events.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The greatest challenge for a mermaid performer is to truly make it seem effortless, graceful, and “natural”.

Creating the illusion of a “real” mermaid requires more than just a gorgeous costume… it requires a lot of skill, training, and talent. All of our performers are professionally trained actors, dancers, models, and athletes with years of experience in all of these disciplines. Our auditioning process is extremely selective, and it really makes a difference!

The real magic of bringing the character to life happens with the posture, the movements, gestures, and vocalization. And all of these details take time and training, and can be challenging to master, but they’re what really make us stand out.

Elite Mermaids – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Elite Mermaids began with the dream of bringing mythical creatures to life… and because we live in such a beautiful beach city, specializing in glamorous mermaids was the perfect choice!

Our goal from the very beginning was to create an alluring atmosphere of magic and enchantment for special events, from children’s birthday parties, to luxurious galas, weddings, and corporate events.

We are a unique team of expert performers, photographers, costume designers, and artists who work together to create the best experience for each unique event… and there’s nothing we love more than sharing our talent and magic with our audience and clients, and seeing their faces brimming with awe and delight!

Over the years, we have successfully become the leading mermaid entertainment company of San Diego and Los Angeles thanks to our team’s work ethic, our skilled performers, and our commitment to maintaining the illusion of magic in every detail.

We have performed for weddings, corporate events, movie premiers, music festivals, cosmetics companies, band tours, and celebrities. We look forward to continuing to grow as a company and to keep creating memorable experiences for our clients here in San Diego!

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success for us at Elite Mermaids is when we see the expressions of amazement, wonder and delight from our audience.

Whether it’s children or adults, we know our characters have successfully created an aura of magic when our audience is willing to suspend disbelief for a moment and just allow themselves to get excited to see a “real” mermaid and become immersed in the interaction.
