Today we’d like to introduce you to Tatum Prince
Hi Tatum, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
How I Started My Business
When I was 18, I felt very insecure about my skin. My mom took me to get a laser treatment, and I remember asking the nurse how I could do her job. She told me I needed to become a registered nurse. That advice planted a seed in my mind, and I embarked on a diverse career journey.
I took on various odd jobs, including an unexpected stint at a mortuary. While working there wasn’t something I initially sought out, I discovered a deep satisfaction in helping families cope with their loss. This experience reinforced my desire to pursue a career in nursing, so I took the plunge and enrolled in nursing school.
During my time in nursing school, I also obtained my Esthetician License. To support myself, I worked as an Esthetician at a medical spa. This role not only helped me refine my skills in skincare but also solidified my passion for aesthetics and patient care.
After earning my RN license, I moved to Texas and worked at an amazing medical spa. The experience and knowledge I gained there were invaluable, but despite my professional growth, I missed my family. I realized that I wanted more autonomy in my career, which led me to the decision to open my own business.
In May of 2023, I launched Aesthetic Club! Since opening, we have been dedicated to providing top-notch skincare and aesthetic treatments. Now, over a year later, I am incredibly proud of how far we’ve come. Our success is a testament to the passion and dedication that started from a simple question about a nurse’s job, and I am excited for the future of Aesthetic Club.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Opening Aesthetic Club in May of 2023 proved to be a major challenge from the start. Having been out of San Diego for a year, many of my former clients had found new “go-to” providers. Rebuilding my clientele was daunting, but I was fortunate to have the support of my parents, who let me move in with them during the first year of my business. Their support was invaluable, and I was pleasantly surprised by the number of clients who returned to me. Gradually, I’ve been able to build a solid and loyal clientele.
In addition to reestablishing my client base, I faced challenges in staying true to my passion within the ever-evolving aesthetics industry. New treatments and trends emerge frequently, and it can be overwhelming to keep up with everything. Through this journey, I discovered that I prefer a natural approach, focusing on skin rejuvenation. This realization has guided me in constantly refining my services to align with my philosophy. I understand that continual adaptation and growth are essential in this industry, and I am committed to evolving Aesthetic Club to meet the needs and desires of my clients while staying true to my core values.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
About My Specialization
I specialize in aesthetics, specifically skin treatments. My services include:
Neuro-modulators (Dysport)
EZ GEL/PRF Therapies: A natural blood concentrate I re-inject for fine lines and volume loss.
Chemical Peels
Laser Treatments: IPL, Erbium resurfacing, vein removal.
Micro-needling
Acne Treatments
I am known for my skin transformations and natural approach to aesthetics. I have a deep understanding of specific skin conditions such as acne, rosacea, melasma, and hyperpigmentation, and I tailor treatments to individual skin types. My background as an esthetician has been tremendously helpful in my specialty. As a nurse, I can effectively treat these conditions with advanced tools like lasers and micro-needling for deeper treatments.
I am most proud of my honest approach to aesthetics and my loyal clientele base. I never try to oversell, which I believe is why my clients have been so loyal to me. By keeping my pricing fair and slightly lower than industry standards, I ensure my clients can return for the treatments they need to achieve their desired results. This client-focused approach has been the cornerstone of my success.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Opening my business was a huge risk. After being away for a year, I returned to San Diego, where the high cost of living meant I needed to find a sustainable way to support myself. Unfortunately, medical spas often don’t pay well and rarely offer benefits or full-time positions, making it clear that I needed to work for myself to survive.
Financially, I’ve taken significant risks as well. For example, purchasing a laser was a major investment, but I believed it was essential for expanding my services and staying competitive.
I believe in playing it safe when taking risks. I waited to make any big purchases until I reached my gross income goals. I also avoided over-purchasing inventory, such as Dysport, even though it can be tempting to buy in bulk to lower costs. My approach is to take smart risks—those that are calculated and based on solid financial planning.
My advice to anyone starting their own business is to take risks, but make sure they are smart risks. Always base your decisions on thorough research and careful consideration, ensuring you are financially prepared for each step.
