Today we’d like to introduce you to Taya Glynn.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started working at The Flower Shop in Encinitas when I was 16 years old. I had just moved to California after my mom had passed away and it’s fair to say I was a bit lost. The women at the shop (shout out to Amy, Paula and Sarah!) took me in and became my pseudo-family. Being surrounded by strong, independent women really helped me get through the toughest time of my life. I continued working for the shop through college, graduated with a degree in Communication and then started my “big girl” job and hated it! I had to sit at a desk and look outside all day. I lasted 6 months. Fast forward to getting engaged and a 3-month “engagement moon” around the US in a ’71 VW bus with my fiance where we had A LOT of time to discuss our future. I always knew I wanted to be a mama but I knew I needed something else as well. Starting my own wedding floral business just made sense.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a business always has its struggles and for me it was really finding my own voice, learning to say no and staying true to my values.
Please tell us about Compass Floral.
Compass Floral is based out of my studio in Encinitas. My husband and I live on a unique piece of property which is a little over an acre, less than a mile from the beach and allows me to have my studio right next to my home. My kids are often in the studio with me, my daughter playing at my feet and my son snuggled close to me in a carrier.
My style is natural and garden-inspired. I strive to consciously arrange flowers, not too wild and not too structured. I believe less is more with the right purpose and placement.
I am most proud of the dedication I have to my clients. I want each of them to know how grateful I am to be a part of their big life events and I do not take their trust lightly. I have a small team who help with design and setup but ultimately I touch every arrangement that leaves the studio.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Visiting my grandparent’s farm. They live in central Illinois and every year my sister and I would fly out to spend a few weeks with them over summer vacation. It was better than camp! Endless cornfields, riding bikes down long country roads, lighting bugs, Weiner roasts. How good are Grandparents! I am very close to them to this day.
