Meet Taylor Leech

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Leech.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Like a lot of artists, my journey started when I was young. I was drawing and painting before I could write and I have always had a deep interest for the outdoors, especially animals. This passion of mine, melted into my creativity, so as a kid, one could guess what my subject matter consisted of. Since, art was the one thing that was constant in my life, and something that I could not let go of throughout my schooling, I decided to hone my skills and applied to Laguna College of Art and Design (LCAD). Although this decision was not hard to make for myself, a lot of family and friends were skeptical and even opposed to the idea of me going to art school. However, knowing that it was my passion, I went for it anyway and became one of the best decisions of my life. By graduating LCAD with my BFA, I learned so much about my passion and really got to find my voice as an artist.

Please tell us about your art.
My art is direct reflection of the experiences I’ve had in my life. When I was younger, my family lived in the San Gabriel Mountains, so I would spend a lot of my time outdoors and would frequently be visited by all kinds of wildlife. My vacations consisted of going to the mountains, and I started to connect with the character and peace of these regions, which to me, started to feel like home. These are just a couple of things that have inspired me and shaped me into the artist I am today. My art consists of landscapes and animals, focused primarily on mountains and the wildlife that inhabits it. I mostly work in watercolor, oil, or pen and ink, but lately I have been enjoying watercolor. I love the unpredictability and freeness of the medium that I think imitates the way nature can be. Recreating images of nature onto a canvas or paper is one of the best feelings and I hope my viewers take a little bit of adventure and inspiration with them when they view my work.

We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
As an artist myself, I find it better to connect with other artists as well as people on a day to day basis. To me, the cure for loneliness, isn’t only waiting for other people to connect with me, but going out of my way to check in on the people around me as well.

With that said, from my experience, I’ve found that other artists are very open to speaking to me when I actually take the time to reach out to them. Most people will take the time and are actually happy to pass down some of their knowledge and connect with someone who wants to connect with them, so my advice is to just take a chance and reach out… chances are, the experience will be a good one.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
