Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Mactal.
Taylor, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I had always loved the idea of making someone, and myself, feel beautiful. I started getting into makeup when I was in middle school and my sister was working at Sephora.
She would give me free samples of products and I learned how to do my makeup, the way most millennials do, through YouTube. It quickly became something I loved and I knew that I wanted to pursue it beyond doing my own makeup. I took the plunge and attend Bellus Academy in Poway for the Makeup Artistry program.
While I was there, I really honed in on my skills and learned how to make this a profession rather than just a hobby. I discovered that I loved the high fashion and editorial makeup world. Although it took some time to really gain some momentum and recognition for my work, I had amazing help from people like Caitlyn Gaurano, who held a lot of faith in me to bring the makeup element alive in their photoshoots.
I also work for a Skin Studio & Boutique in North Park by the name of “Angelica B Beauty.” the SD Voyager had featured my employer, Angelica, a couple months back. I work there not only as a receptionist, but an “In-House” makeup artist for any events that we are hired for. I have been a Certified Makeup Artist since January of this year and I am incredibly happy with my journey so far, but definitely can’t wait to see what else I can accomplish.
Has it been a smooth road?
There were times where I felt like I didn’t choose the right path. That I could never make my makeup artistry a profession. Being in an industry that is so saturated, it’s hard to figure out what makes you so different from anyone else. I would often ask myself, “Why would someone pick you over another artist?” or “How can you make a living off of this?” I quickly realized that I was asking these questions for the wrong reasons. I didn’t care about making it, I just wanted to do what I loved.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Taylor Mactal Makeup Artistry story. Tell us more about the business.
I consider myself a more high fashion and editorial makeup artist, but my abilities do not stop there. I was also trained in special effects makeup as well as bridal, mature, and male makeup. I do believe I have a very strong work ethic and I deliver what the client wants to see.
So what I believe sets me apart from others is that I pay attention to details and I really listen to what the client asks for. I also believe that because I am a Certified Makeup Artist, I am able to use techniques that better serve the clients needs such as paying attention to their face shape, their eye shape, their skin texture, etc. I will create results that best suits them.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I hope to be in Los Angeles within the next few years. This move is what I believe will propel me to my highest goal, which is to be a celebrity makeup artist. One day, I want to see my work to be worn on the red carpets by individuals like Rihanna, Lady Gaga, and anyone in between.
I am also going to be a published makeup artist within the next couple months so I hope that will bring more momentum and exposure to my artistry.
