Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylour Gonzales.
Taylour, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born in Detroit, Michigan, one of the hair capitals in the US. Growing up, my Aunt owned a salon back home. From a young age, I fell in love with the atmosphere of being in the salon and watching my Aunt do hair. After moving to San Diego at the age of six, hair was something that meant a lot to me. I was the kid that gave all my Barbie’s haircuts and used my mom’s mascara to color their hair black. So I’ve always been in love with hair & salon life.
When I was a senior in high school, I took a cosmetology elective, and in that class, I learned the basics of cosmetology and got to be creative. From this elective, I got a scholarship to go to cosmetology school, and literally three weeks after graduating, I was in cosmetology school. I graduated in 2013, and by October of 2014, I was a licensed cosmetologist working in a salon.
The beginning of my career was around the time when natural hair was extremely popular. I have always taken a liking to ethnic hair, and how diverse our hair is. From that time, I realized my main focus was natural hair! I love doing twist styles, twist outs, silk presses, perm rod sets, color, and cuts. I also love educating my clients on healthy hair care and product knowledge. As a cosmetologist, its important to educate your clients. Healthy hair is my #1 goal!!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
If it was smooth, it wouldn’t be as rewarding! I’m a firm believer that hard work pays off!! Some struggles I dealt with was finding my voice, building my clientele, and building my presence online. It definitely takes time to find all of that. I’ve been licensed almost six years, and it’s still not easy. But I love what I do, and I wouldn’t trade my career for ANYTHING!!!!!!!
Hair By T.Anngee – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a licensed Cosmetologist, and I have my own salon suite. I specialize in healthy hair care, emphasis on natural hair!! I would say I’m known for my silk presses, and being a natural hairstylist. I’m honestly proud of being so established in my career at such a young age! I was 23 when I opened my own salon suite, and I take pride in being a go-getter!!! I think my care of healthy hair sets me apart from others. I want my clients to be happy when they leave my chair, but I also want them to have healthy amazing hair!
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment would have to be opening my salon suite. I always knew I wanted to be a salon owner, but I thought I would accomplish that goal at 30 years old, but I opened my suite when I was 23. So I jumped seven years ahead of schedule! It was an amazing experience to start that chapter in my life, and having the support from my loved ones!! It’s been just about a year now, and I’m still so happy I have a salon suite to call mine!
