Meet Terrence White

Today we’d like to introduce you to Terrence White.

Terrence, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
God, Career, Business, Voices. The beginning is always within the deep and the deep is always full of unknowns until we voice out what is to be and act out what is desired with compassion and tenacity. There is a quote that I have lived by for several years now. When I am at a point of giving up, I hold it close. It encourages me, guides me, and reminds me where I have been. I will share it with you: Though thy beginning was small, yet thy latter end should greatly increase.

Like many people in business, my first product was candy. I was the kid in class that really did not see the point of school because money was all one needed… right? WRONG! Now having a Masters’s degree, I can see the importance of education and the power of knowledge. For me, that is where I started in business – school. I can still recall opening up notes in class asking if I had any Cherry suckers remaining, sending back a note saying “SOLD OUT,” but passing back two free of another flavor; customer loyalty!

My first idea for a large scale business was developed while in high school. I elected to complete an English For Business Courses and developed a Limousine company – not to date myself, but this was before Uber. My teacher really deserves all the credit. It was her that believed in my ideas and gave me the courage to take risks. Top Cat Limousine company had a fleet of five Cadillac vehicles ready to move Southern California! I had yet to obtain a Drivers License, but had several packages from Cadillac full of vehicle specs and a personal sales representative ready to help me with my order! The objective of the class was really to help us understand the science of business. I can thank Nicole Thren for that, it is her that challenged me to think with integrity, always be prepared, and to have pride in all that I do.

Since then, I have worked for several Fortune 500 companies, owned several successful online businesses, and been a consultant for small businesses. Some include your bank, the company that makes the device you are likely using to read this, and a few more. I get asked, “What do you do,” frequently and to be honest, we all do the same thing. I am in the business of empathy. That is the real product. Every company wants their employee to sell something – be it tangible or a service. It is rare that I have found a customer wanting to do continuous business with a grumpy person. That is where I am today in business. Be it leading a team, discussing business decisions with fellow leaders, or parenting my son. I try what has yet to be done to help others develop into who they are to become.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would question the person who perceives things that are intended to be without quarrel. That is what a business does. It solves a problem. The road should rarely be smooth. Narrow, yes. Smooth infers complacency. Imagine a high mountain top. The peak is where the mind will focus, but the heart is needed for the climb.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
There are two parts of what I do. I am a salesperson by career and a writer by passion. Me being in sales pays the bills and my writing creates my legacy. I specialize in helping actualize what they dream about. The specialty of industrial-organizational psychology (also called I/O psychology) is characterized by the scientific study of human behavior in organizations and the workplace. The specialty focuses on deriving principles of individual, group and organizational behavior and applying this knowledge to the solution of problems at work. Easily said, a company will hire me to analyze their business to identify why it is performing at its current level and design a plan for change.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Having my son and realizing I have no control over what happens is this world, only how I behave and interact with others.
