Meet Thanh Luu of Light Solutions Dental in Carlsbad

Today we’d like to introduce you to Thanh Luu.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Thanh. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
It started when I (Dr. Thanh Luu) was a dental student and wanted to bring affordability to our dental equipment. One of the things that we needed as a dental light – a device to give direct vision light so that dentists can see better and without shadow. Those things have always been far too expensive. That is why I set out to work, with a little knowledge about electronics and a lot of burnt LED and broken lights along the way, I created a super affordable dental light.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There were MANY struggles along the way, and the company almost did not even come to exist. As students experiment on lights, purchasing other lights can be expensive and costly for students. Then there was the science behind it, understanding the electronic components, LEDs, battery, switch, amp and voltage regulators, etc. It was almost like studying engineering as a dental student. Then as a dentist, the struggle was getting a product to market, ranging from production to marketing. Along the way, my wife and I had two kids, a conservative and preventative dental practice. Just a lot of things can get in the way of starting a company.

Please tell us about Light Solutions Dental.
Our company is a dental light and loupes (basically visual equipment for dentist to do better dentistry). We bring to market can very unique and technical product. What we are most proud of is that we are able to keep our cost low and make our electronics affordable. This way, dentists can pass the savings on to their patients.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Growing up, I would always take apart every electronic equipment that broke and try to fix them and learn from them. I remember finding a VHS player (back in the old days) in the trash because someone throws it out when it stopped working. My parents and I lived humble lives and could not afford a VHS player at the time. Back then, it was new technology and expensive. So, I took the broken VHS player home, took it apart, and actually managed to fix it using some rubber bands. and some wiring. What broke was the bands that run the wheels and pulley in the VHS player. My parents and especially I were SO excited to have a VHS player that we were always wanting to have but could not afford to. It was all thanks to some clever fixing.
