Today we’d like to introduce you to Thao Huynh and Kolten French.
Thao and Kolten, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Thao and I have always been passionate about art even at an early age. We took the corporate path upon entering the workforce to grow our careers and unfortunately experienced a lot of negative stuff just for a paycheck. Watching the world in its current state has also made us realize that we need to stand for something much bigger than ourselves.
We decided to start a business that was driven by a mission to create social change and joy for the world through art (especially for the ones most vulnerable among us, children). We believe schools serve such a key role in a child’s development and these institutions should be bright, fun, engaging and inspiring. This gave us the idea of specializing in thoughtful, beautiful, interactive and educational art and place them where it would be most beneficial.
Mindful Murals has been able to grow because of the amazing support we have received from our friends, family, clients. It’s cool to see people enjoy our work and share it all over social media! It’s fulfilling in so many ways. Our hard work is finally paying off and we’re working towards much bigger plans over the next few years.
Has it been a smooth road?
Choosing to become full time artists is not easy. It is a challenge, but it is possible if you want it as bad as you want to breathe. This has been the most rewarding experience of our lives.
We are our accountants, production managers, designers, customer service and marketing team, but the biggest struggle for us was un-learning everything we were taught when we were working for other companies. It’s okay to not have a due date for every. single. little. the task, and plan for every. single. little. contingency. Life just doesn’t work that way. Do your best, enjoy the ride, reward yourself when you have small victories and be empathetic to others. The best advice we can give is to work hard and smart and expect adversity. Without adversity, growth would be stunted. On top of all of this, we’ve both grown to love and respect each other a lot more than we thought was possible.
Please tell us about your company.
Our business, Mindful Murals, is a company driven by a mission to change the world through interactive and functional art. What sets us apart is our grit, tenacity, creativity and imagination. We choose to innovate. We are a small, but mighty team. We plan on serving our communities while building a profitable company- and most importantly, doing so without compromising our moral values.
