Today we’d like to introduce you to Thayne Yungman.
The Gallery has been operating in North Pacific Beach since 1972. The current owner, Thayne, bought the business from original owners, Jay and Vicki Ford, 10 years ago this April. They are a constantly evolving custom framing shop, local gift shop and local artist hang out.
They currently showcase around 35 local artists and makers, showing everything from pottery to woodworking to artisan soap. They are looking forward to their 50-year celebration coming up in the future and have no plans on stopping!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I purchased the Gallery in 2008, dead in the middle of the Great Recession and it was both a blessing and a curse. Having a built-in, loyal framing clientele was probably the only thing that got us through those first 3 years. That being said, the Gallery was in need of a desperate physical facelift so there was plenty of sweat equity that went into some late nights with friends and family lending hands. The Gallery also needed to be updated internally with new workflows and modern displays. We didn’t even own a computer, let alone a POS system!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Gallery At Land’s End – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Custom Picture Framing is our main business and it’s a great business to be in. With over 70 combined years of experience in framing design and manufacturing, the staff at the gallery is up for any challenge. We are also really proud of our locally crafted gifts and goods side of the business. We decided to open that side of the business 5 years ago and it has slowly and organically grown into a really fun side business that brings clientele into the store and makes people happy. We say it’s like an Etsy store that you can pick up and touch… and it’s all made locally!
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m currently expanding my own little woodworking business. Salvaging urban fallen trees and using them to create usable home decor.
