Today we’d like to introduce you to Thomas Jackson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up in the construction supply business. My grandfather started a drywall delivery business back in 1972, from there my father grew the business into a much larger construction supply yard. Upon graduating from the University of Cincinnati I also joined the family business. I decided to launch a landscape installation division of the business because I had a passion for reinventing outdoor spaces. I spent the next couple of years growing that part of the family business. I was looking for a little more out of life and craving a change so I decided to move to San Diego after I met my now wife Marissa. I had friends that lived in Encinitas and knew when I visited San Diego that it was where I needed to be. I used my experience running our family business in Ohio to start Modern Yardz in 2021 and we have been delivering exceptional landscapes in San Diego ever since!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Running and owning a business is never a smooth road! It certainly has its challenges, but I think the biggest struggle was balancing work and my personal life. My wife Marissa is my business partner, and that has created its own challenges, but I think we have become stronger together over the years. Working with your husband or wife is not for the faint of heart haha.

We are a full service Landscape Design & Build company here in San Diego. We specialize in custom outdoor spaces that our clients will be proud of. We are known for our modern style and custom pool designs. Customers praise us for our commitment to not only quality work but exceptional customer service. I think what truly sets us apart is that I treat every project like I would my own, I truly care about the end result of each and every yard. I make it a point to visit every project we’re working on.
