Meet Tiffany Nufio of Brown Sugar Beauty By Tiffany in Serra Mesa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Nufio.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Originally from Maplewood, New Jersey, my journey here in San Diego began when our family traveled cross country to accompany my husband on his military orders. To our surprise, my husband and I discovered an addition to our family and soon came the birth of our second child. Transitioning from a civilian to military lifestyle was not easy.

What I struggled with the most was not only deployments and getting used to taking care of my two children alone, but it was being away from family, close friends and finding outlets to get you through dark times when sometimes all you have is yourself. 2017 was the year I took that first step to seek therapy in order to learn different ways to cope with my pain and emotions.

Being diagnosed with anxiety, postpartum depression, depression, and PTSD really opened my eyes to how serious my condition was. I needed to be healthy and happy not only for myself but for my children. In addition to going for walks and therapy, I found peace in making my own body scrubs and then I decided to dig deeper and make body butter.

Not only did I love the way my skin felt after creating my own body care product, but my production time became a safe haven for my thoughts and worries. Every day is to be taken one day at a time, and my goal as a business owner and mental health advocate is to encourage others not to be ashamed of their diagnosis, and it is okay to speak out for comfort.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Along the way, I can truly say “trial and error” has been my best friend. With my business I started out with, “I think people would like this” to eagerly wanting feedback to see what my customers love and what they would prefer.

Overall my family comes first, so there are times where I would hold off on business to handle things around the house and jump back in.

There are times where I still suffer from anxiety attacks and may be in a slump because of depression, but aside from my business, my children bring me so much joy.

Brown Sugar Beauty By Tiffany – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My brand Brown Sugar Beauty By Tiffany specializes today in bath and body care. We carry a variety of products handmade to uplift spirits and promote self-care. As of today, I am proud of where my company stands. When I first started my business, I didn’t have long term goals or visions just yet.

But being motivated by my customers, family, friends and most importantly myself, I’m eager to keep going because the sky is the limit. What I believe what sets me apart from others are my own personal experiences and how it applies to my brand and daily living.

I’m not ashamed of my story, and I’m very honest when it comes to my feelings. There are not that many people, at least that I have met who are comfortable with the world getting to know the real them.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career so far has been seeing the results of trusting myself. When I first had thoughts of starting my own business, I was extremely nervous and didn’t know if I had what it took to balance my lifestyle and my own brand.

Also seeing my five year daughter, Amerie, engage at vendor events with customers makes me so proud of the way I’m showing her how to lead and take control of her life at such a young age.
