Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Schaaff.
Tiffany, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m Tiffany Schaaff, owner and stylist at ‘DO Beauty Boutique. I have been doing hair literally half my life! Man, that’s crazy to say. I remember sitting completely enamored on career day as the hairstylist mom talked about her job when I was in Kindergarten. I was totally taken by her beauty, style, and everything she had to say about the career.
I started Beauty school at a privately owned Pivot Point Academy my senior year of high school through a program offered by the school and finished shortly after graduation from high school. During beauty school, I apprenticed my future boss and Redken platform artist and continued to work for her for 4 years. After leaving that salon I moved to Chicago and worked at Chicago’s biggest and most known punk rock salon. This was quite the change after working in a salon and day spa environment and was very artistically stretching.
At this salon clients wanted everything from beautiful highlights and a trim to straight off the runway avant guard hair. (Picture couture looks you see in fashion but on hair and people were getting these styles daily. I even had a client who used to draw her hair color and cut ideas as anime cartoons and then has me create them. After a few years of working there, I was ready to go out on my own. I have since worked in Chicago for 13 years even flying between there and San Diego the past 4 years, as a platform artist for Rusk for over 7 years, and here in San Diego for almost 4 years.
That’s my personality while very positive is a little too loud and excited for one salon, another didn’t like that I had kid clients, and another had issues with my availability. I wanted to have a place where both stylist and client could be themselves. A salon where you can feel a good energy and leave feeling more beautiful inside and out. I truly believe that your hair is an extension of your personality, and is the one accessory you get to wear every day. I enjoy doing all ages and all styles of hair. I just love what I do! I created this salon to be a fun, energetic, all welcoming place to come and feel great about yourself.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
When people have asked me about starting a new business, I ask them if they have ever bought a house. Starting the business was a lot like that process where unforeseen money needs to be spent and flexibility is a must. However, some of the coolest changes in our overall design came about from working through some of those challenges.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with ‘DO Beauty Boutique – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
‘DO is a College Area stylist owned salon for all ages. At ‘DO are committed to doing more than just good hair. Your hair is an extension of your personality and the one accessory you wear every day. You should not only feel great about the hair you wear but have fun getting it done.
Our retro vibe cannot only be seen in our decor, but also in the high energy environment. We encourage both our clients and our stylists to be who they are. The best hair comes when we work together with a strong consultation, open listening ear, and artistic abilities that are up to date with the latest industry trends and techniques.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I look forward to growing in the community, as well as giving back. We are so lucky to be a part of the College Area Business District in which all the local businesses are super supportive of one another. We also plan to continue working with the non-for-profit Streets of Hope.
