Today we’d like to introduce you to Timothy Cunningham.
Timothy was born in South Carolina in 1983. After being raised there up to adolescent years, he has since lived in the Seattle, El Paso, Norfolk and Greenville, SC areas. Now residing in Oceanside, CA, he continues his journey as a professional artist which began at the age of 16. Timothy is also a Marine Corps Veteran of the war in Iraq. Spending the majority of 2003 serving in combat in Iraq, Timothy aspires to explore that niche in the near future. With many commissions and exhibitions over the years, he continues to work to master his skills as a fine artist with oils, water, acrylic and charcoal as he believes that life is just one long class period of learning. His work is held in private collections nation wide. Timothy hosts paint parties, workshops, mentors other artists on skill set and business strategies, teaches art classes in the North County cities and is very passionate about his teachings while looking forward to what the future brings.
Please tell us about your art.
The majority of my work is paintings. I re-create from images I see and not from the mind. There’s many techniques used to get the paintings going and completed. Only half of the time do I use the same techniques, because I’m constantly researching and learning new ways to streamline and create. However, when painting realism, there aren’t many ways to speed it up. I want my work to give the same feelings that I felt when I saw the actual event or people in the photo. I paint people very well. The responsibility of getting them on the canvas right and pleasing the eye of the viewer is what makes me do well at people. You can’t fool the viewer.
In these past years, painting people in motion has become more intriguing. Using photography of yoga, music, dance, sports and so on as my muse. When afforded the opportunity, painting on 3D objects such as tiki poles, surfboards and small murals catches my intrigue as well. Creating the instructional paintings for my paint party classes gives me space to become more creative and loose with my work. The classes are more entertainment oriented vs challenging, therefore creating the pieces are as well.
Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
The role of an artists has most beneficially improved with the ability to have an online presence. Today, a professional artist has to tackle the role hitting the pavement and showcasing city to city, then put on their virtual assistant hat and establish and nurture their online presence, online storefronts, social platforms, email lists and more. While these things sound overwhelming, with the right team, the artist can tremendously benefit from their online presence. This is my goal for 2018.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
timothycunninghamfinearts.com >>>The online gallery is stocked with many images and videos of the creation of several pieces. I try keeping my calendar up to date on where to find my classes and how to visit my events and showcases.
Follow my stories on all platforms for behind the scenes of the artist life as I share what’s beyond the walls of the studio and classroom. I give online coaching to the green artists and network with many others who are killing the game on all platforms.
