Meet Today Daniel Ziriakus, President & COO of Northrop & Johnson.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Ziriakus, President & COO of Northrop & Johnson.

Hi Daniel, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.

My background is really in Advertising and Marketing, that’s how it all started. I was born just south of Munich, Germany, but left my home early to finish high school and then study at Bond University in Australia. I went to study deep into Commerce and Psychology and found my passion in a space that combined analytical thinking about macro- and microeconomic trends with how a person’s or nation’s mind works, what attracts customers to brands, and how to set up a brand for optimum success in order to scale and eventually achieve multiples for various potential exit scenarios. I then went on to study Advertising Design and eventually received my Executive MBA from the University of Miami. Throughout my college years, I was an integral part of a small advertising agency, which we then sold in my early 20’s to then start my “post college” life with a large Branding Agency, based in Miami, NYC, and Buenos Aires. I always had a natural entrepreneurial knack and was able to combine this with an integral understanding of branding to achieve scale through expanding market share and ultimately exponential customer acquisition. During my sting at the branding agency, Fraser Yachts knocked on my door for a global rebrand. While we didn’t win the account, I was presented with an offer to join the Fraser Yachts team on the marketing side, to support the organization with a global rebrand. This was my starting point in the yachting space, the rest is history.

Over the last 16 years, I’ve worked myself up from head of Marketing for the US at Fraser Yachts, to Global Head of Marketing at Camper & Nicholsons in Monaco, to COO of N&J, and eventually President of the firm. Throughout the years where I was based in multiple locations in the US and Europe, I had the chance to meet amazing people – many of which still work with me today. With my team we rebranded and restructured three large global superyacht firms, first Fraser, then Camper & Nichsolsons, and eventually Northrop & Johnson – all of which have seen significant growth post the process.

Northrop & Johnson has been the greatest success story in my opinion, mainly due to the fact that we were able to apply all the knowledge from the past years into one firm. On top of that, Northrop & Johnson’s unbeatable company culture, based on innovation, sharing, and allowing team members to exert their growth mindsets to their fullest, gave the brand an edge that has allowed us to 10x the company over the last years by doing things different to the competition. I’d call it the digital vs analog if I’d have to summarize it in one sentence.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?

Smooth road? What’s that? 😊 No road is smooth if you’re trying to change an industry from a set way of old school principles and bring an organization into a modern, digital way of doing business. Innovation takes a lot of planning and hard work – nothing happens without the long grind behind it. There is no easy way out. Over the years we have fine-tuned the business to be run on marketing intelligence and deep insights into buying behaviors – I’d actually argue that we’re a marketing and technology business at this point in time, which our products and services are based on superyachting.

As you know, we’re big fans of Northrop & Johnson. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?

Northrop & Johnson was founded in 1949 in New York City, NY. Since our inception, we have grown leaps and bounds and are now the preeminent global luxury yacht brokers. We offer a full suite of services, including yacht sales and purchase, yacht charter and charter marketing, yacht management, and crew placement services.

What sets Northrop & Johnson apart is our innovative, pioneering spirit and deep investment in marketing and technology. So many other firms within the yachting space are still operating in an analog-style. In contrast, Northrop & Johnson is the first to be wholly digital and embrace the ever-changing digital landscape in which we live today. It sets us apart significantly and has allowed us to provide added benefits to our clients that other firms cannot offer. Furthermore, Northrop & Johnson is a member of the MarineMax family. As part of the world’s largest boat dealer family, the Northrop & Johnson team has a support system not found at smaller brokerage houses.

We are most proud of our team. The brokers and staff of Northrop & Johnson are second to none, which is why we’ve been able to achieve expansive growth and impressive success throughout the years. Our industry-leading record of yacht sales, growing charter fleet, and global expansion are a testament to our extraordinary people, both clients, and team members. We believe when you put people first, success follows.
