Meet Todd Glaser

Today we’d like to introduce you to Todd Glaser.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was born and raised in San Diego which is where I’ve spent most of my life in and around the ocean. I’m a photographer, surfer, and waterman who has turned a passion into photography into a career starting as a SURFER Magazine Staff Photographer since 2008. I’ve had the great fortune to work closely with a number of friends and companies who share a similar vision both on the land and in the water. Some of my work has appeared in The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Men’s Health, GQ and the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, in Washington DC as well as commercially for a number of clients including the KS Wave Co, Outerknown, Vans, HBO, Google, Pottery Barn, and Bloomingdales. Work aside, I’m a pretty simple guy that likes to surf, travel, bike, live an active and healthy lifestyle and drink way too much coffee. My wife and I are currently living in Solana Beach.

Please tell us about your art.
My art is a combination of spending a lifetime around the ocean and focusing on the nuances not that not many people get to see or experience. By having such an intimate relationship with the water, I’m able to share those with others through my lens. If I were a better writer or painter, it would be done through those mediums, but for me, the camera is an extension of my arm and allows me to show the world through my eyes via the lens. I’ve been very lucky to have been able to travel to some of the most far off and remote locations to not only document but experience different cultures, oceans, waves, and all while doing with it friends who share the same passion as I do.

Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
Art is a way to bring people together from all walks of life and allows us all to have an individual voice along with a platform to share our visions. We all see the world a little differently, and our personal experiences that strongly resonate with us are what can subconsciously inspire us to paint a certain way, take a photo at a particular time or organize words in such a way that is unique to us. There is no right or wrong, but now with the accessibility of cameras to so many people, it has been a challenge to constantly create and capture the best work possible to not only feel personally satisfied but to stand out among the rest.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
A lot of my work can be found in magazines as both advertisements and editorial or in my first published book titled Proximity. I’m still a sucker for print media and hold it in very high value.

Currently, I have an image that is a part of the permanent collection at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC of Kelly Slater made in Indonesia.
