Today we’d like to introduce you to Tomas Hicks.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Dirty Pennies was started early 2015 in the Sherman Heights section of San Diego. It was originally conceived just to be a fun side project, something where friends can play open mics and coffee shops. But as we started to play and develop our original songs together, we realized we had potential to do much more. We are currently a five-piece band.
Jacquie on lead vocals, Ro on guitar, Haley on keys, Kit on drums, and myself, Tomas on bass. At our core, we are a traditional rock and roll band, but very influenced by the soul sounds of the early 70s. While we do incorporate many different genres depending on which song we are playing, our overall sound has been described as groove rock, or rock and soul. We are very active in the local music scene here in So Cal, and have just completed recording our first album, which we will be releasing very shortly.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
In life, as well as the local music scene, success can be influenced by who you know. As I was starting out here as a complete outsider, it was a bit of a struggle to get known and become trusted as a musician within the local community.
Fortunately, when the opportunities have presented themselves, we have been ready to meet the challenges.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Dirty Pennies – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
If we played 10 different people 10 different songs, they would probably have 10 different opinions of what our band sounds like. Our songs can be very eclectic and no two songs really sound like the other.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We are in the planning stages of our album release party for our first album which is self-titled Dirty Pennies.
