Today we’d like to introduce you to Tonya Tolver.
Tonya, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In 2015, I relocated back to San Diego after my contract finished in LA.
I started learning the dance of Chicago Steppin at the then “Cork” known as the Townhouse in Los Angeles.
After moving home, I continued to drive up & down the freeway to Los Angeles & Riverside just to dance.
I said to myself, we NEED this in San Diego. So, I reached out to an instructor by the name of Steppin B, who gave us our start, along with Carlton Puckett, Alvin Carter, & Showtyme the Stepper for about two years. And now, we have our permanent resident instructor, CHOC James, who teaches the class regularly.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth no, challenging yes!
There were politics that we knew about AND ones we didn’t!
Here, we were just wanting to expand the dance community w/new dancers BUT we were definitely met with challenges.
Most recently, we’ve faced local challenges w/spin-offs of the class BUT the efforts have been unsuccessful.
Please tell us about SDC Steppers – what should we know?
SDC Steppers is a Chicago Steppin dance organization.
I’m most known for my affiliation w/local San Diego Events & I’m most proud of my Travel Agency, TKET Agency, which I use for events & travel.
I definitely believe TKET Agency sets me apart from the competition. There is so much flexibility in working deals & negotiations.
