Today we’d like to introduce you to Torri Hughes.
Torri, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Ripped Radio Network began in 2006, as just a show called “Ripped Radio”. It was an internet radio show formed at the infancy and beginning stages of internet radio and streamed live from my basement. The show gained a tremendous amount of followers. In 2008, the show took a sabbatical from its station and decided to move on to an actual studio in Largo, MD. That particular station (called IM4Radio) wanted to charge us $400 a month, which we thought was too much. At that time, I did admire their business format. I decided to turn Ripped Radio (the show), into Ripped Radio (the Network), using their model but tweaking it and not charging it as much.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Wow, there were so many struggles. For the first five years, I was a walking studio. We were renting space in other people’s studios, paying them for time, I made ZERO profit. I had to take down and put up/set up equipment before and after each show. I carried 50 proud speakers in my trunk, taking them down steps and up steps each show. A Lot of people always talk about “the struggle is real, nope, this struggle was REALLY real!
Please tell us about your company.
Ripped Radio Network is an Online Entertainment Network, or more widely known, an “Internet Radio” company. I don’t like to call it “Radio” because we are video and our format is more entertainment. We are most known for our charismatic personalities and various states and cities we stream in. I am most proud of the slow, but steady growth of the company, how we want from asking people to be part, to now being almost overwhelmed and in demand. I am also proud of how we have won five awards over the past nine years, truly humbles you and makes you realize how all of those struggles were well worth it.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment is seeing personalities on our network go on to AM/FM & Satellite Radio opportunities. Some have gone on to movies and more in the entertainment field. There are not many other “Internet Radio” Networks that can say that. They normally have people who have already been there THEN comes to them, I am proud of the internal home grown talent we have helped develop.
