Meet Trailblazer Abigail Jeen Schaff

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abigail Jeen Schaff.

Abigail Jeen, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am originally from North Dakota. My journey in the hair world began after moving to California to start Cosmetology school in Orange County right after graduating high school. It was quite the culture shock-a country girl lost in the city world. But I quickly fell in love with the opportunities the hair industry had to offer. After graduating, I started in the assisting program at my current salon, Acappella Hair Design and Color Studio for the owner where I was able to gain expert knowledge and perfect my craft while building my clientele. I have now been to Acappella for nine years and can’t imagine being anywhere else.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My biggest piece of advice to young women starting out in their journey is to find a mentor. Find someone who believes in you when you find it tough to believe in yourself, someone who will be your biggest fan and push you to be your very best. My road definitely has not been smooth, but I have a mentor (Sherri) that believes in me, that pushes me, challenges me to be better and continues to help me grow. Find your mentor and stick with them.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I have been in the industry for nine years. I am a precision haircutter and I specialize in custom color and hair extensions. I am most proud of my accomplishment of becoming an American Board Certified Haircolorist. My biggest accomplishment is being voted the Very Best of the Inland Empire’s Stylists from 2012-2019.

Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
In finding a mentor, I would suggest you know your core values. Make a list of what you’re looking for and what you hope to grow into for the future. Make a vision board. I have had my biggest successes networking by word of mouth recommendations and coffee meeting conversations rather than through the internet. I am really trying to make that more of a focus this year, putting my phone down and networking face to face!
