Today we’d like to introduce you to Arielle Berneman.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
In March 2017, Sweat in SD was started from a random idea of wanting to share my favorite fitness studios and fitness events around San Diego. Initially, it was an Instagram account to share local events and happenings. It was my way of influencing others.
After consistently mentioning fitness events around San Diego, I was approached with an opportunity to host my own event with a local indoor cycling studio. Probably, the most intimidating thing I’ve ever done. I had zero clues what I was doing but I said yes, because you just don’t say no to those opportunities. I wanted to go all out. I had sponsors, swag bags, raffles and a sold-out event, 2 days later. I still have chills from that day. I had 45 attendees coming together to take a spin class that I organized through Sweat in SD a month after it was created.
My hosted fitness events combined with my love for fitness studios, wellness, skincare, and everyday life is what @sweatinsd represents.
Has it been a smooth road?
Sweat in SD has been one of the craziest journies. It hasn’t been the smoothest road but the growth that I’ve witnessed over the last year is a constant reminder that nothing good happens overnight. It’s a process and coming to terms with that is a crucial step to success.
The biggest struggle I’ve experienced when owning my own business is that all the pressure is on you, you handle literally everything. You’re the one who’s in contact with everyone; the studio owners, the brands, the followers. Sometimes, you have to play the good guy, and sometimes, you have to play the bad guy. You have to have your own back. Do your research so you know what’s fair to ask for and what to expect from people you work with.
Make sure to be kind to everyone. You really never know who you will meet and where it will take you. Don’t be afraid to ask for what you deserve. Don’t get discouraged when people say no. Understand the importance of social media and the exposure it can give you. It can be such a powerful tool and has completely changed my life.
Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
Be a constant learner. Look for people who are doing what you want to do and observe their practices. Don’t be afraid to ask for help or ask questions. Tell people your story, you never know who may want to help or mentor you.
