Meet Trailblazer Ashley Pinon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Pinon.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Ashley. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My daughter is one of the biggest inspirations behind Pepe&Co. When she was born, it was really just us two. After a year or so, Penelope and I moved out of my mom’s house. That’s when I decided I was going to raise her by myself. One of the biggest goals is to inspire her to be independent and to work for what she believes in. I made the decision of starting a bussines in the beauty industry with my cousin at the age of 24. That didn’t go so well, we weren’t passionate about what we did, things didn’t go as planned and we had to shut down our bussines. After that experience, I knew I still wanted to pursue my dream of being an entrepreneur and eventually own my own business, I had a few ideas and plans for opening something similar to what I had already done. However, I never felt confident enough, so I decided to work on my self-development first and really take time to find my true passion. I read many good books and played an inspirational podcast on my way to work every day. Then, a few months ago, I was presented with the opportunity to design clothes, This came to me as an eye-opener. Ever since I can remember, fashion has always played a big role in my life. I just feel that having a good outfit put together can boost your self-esteem and make you feel confident about yourself. I came to the decision to start my business with children’s accesories. I started designing turbans, headbands, bows, and then eventually worked my way up to clothes for children. I found this to be a bonding activity between me and my daughter because she as well plays a part within the creative side of Pepe&Co. And wait there’s more we’re just getting started!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I definitely have my struggles here and there. However, when things don’t work out as planned, I try to learn from the situation and get the best out of it. Also, reading and listening to peoples experiences inspires me not to give up on my dreams. As a single mother, my advice for other women would be to ask your loved ones for support when you need it, read a book, listen to a podcast, study women that inspire you. Distancing yourself from negative and unproductive people is key. Even if that’s someone you’re really close to, you’ll notice the difference.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Pepe&Co. – what should we know?
Other than working a full-time job apart from my personal business, I spend my free time looking for quality products to create genuine designs and offer my customers a unique piece they’ll be proud to see on their children. What I feel separates my product from others is the fact that. All the textiles are handpicked by me according to seasonal trends and colors. Then, handmade by my personal seamstress. And then finally single packaged and delivered according to my customer’s needs.

We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
Relating to my own situation. Juggling between motherhood, business and personal growth. There’s always an expectation of being the best in every aspect of our life. And the road to success isn’t easy, especially for a woman. Every day challenges involve, lack of confidence in ourselves as mothers or workers, high daycare prices and the guilt of not being capable of witnessing every second of their lives because of work, deciding between these two can only lead to bringing out your very best to raise a good-hearted human and at the same time provide to give both of you a decent lifestyle. And yet, I truly believe this is the perfect time for women to express their deepest desires and fulfill their dreams. Regardless of what others think or say.
