Today we’d like to introduce you to Bethany Noble-Lindsay.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Two years ago, Lindsay, Ingvild and I got together and dreamed out what it would look like to start a therapy practice together. We knew the sacrifices it would take to make this happen and so we knew if we were going to take the leap, we wanted it to be for something really beautiful and special. Cultivate was born out of the desire for us to create a space where people felt like they had arrived home as soon as they parked. And then again, as soon as they opened our door. And then, most importantly, when they sit in the office with an incredible and skilled therapist who genuinely cares for their clients. We began looking for office space in unconventional locations. We didn’t want our office to feel clinical, but rather warm and inviting. We didn’t want to be in a row if office suites, but more in a neighborhood, where there was a community. When we saw this space above a Pie shop on Park Blvd., we were intrigued. The space was completely bare. It was a daunting task, but it has the potential to become whatever we dreamed it up to be. Next thing we know we opened in May 2017.
In August 2018, we realized, we desperately needed more office space, as our team and clientele were building, and that’s when we found an amazing space in La Mesa. The weirdest part was that the space oddly mirrors our Park Blvd office in so many ways. It’s like sister offices that greatly resemble one another. And both are on great business and community streets. We couldn’t resist! We signed the lease and began renovations and design. We opened our second location only a few months ago in November 2018.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There have been many bumps along the road in the last two years. One of the sayings Lindsay, Ingvild and I say to each other regularly is, “We can do hard things!” Being people who had never run a business before, we had a lot to learn, and a lot of learning through mistakes we have made. We still have yet to figure out how to bring to fruition all of our original dreams, but we haven’t forgotten them. But it is hard knowing there are limitations currently and some dreams have to be on hold until the time is right.
One of the most rewarding parts of owning this business is hearing people share with us how we’ve inspired them. I think people seeing three regulars, everyday women, who are also moms, open a business and take on this type of project, creates space in other women’s minds that they can do this too! And they can!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Cultivate: A Counseling Collective – what should we know?
Therapeutically Cultivate is known for our love of the Enneagram, how many amazing EMDR therapists we have, our work with kids and families, our EFT couples therapists, and our love for our young adult clients and people who live in our neighborhoods!
But Cultivate is not just therapy sessions. Our hope is that through our space, our events and workshops and even our social media presence, we are creating a community of people who are committing to cultivating wholeness in their lives.
We value a well-curated space, being in a neighborhood, real plants, beautiful design, local decor, and good coffee in our office because we believe it cultivates a sense of home and warmth in our clients, which enables them to feel more inclined towards growth in their sessions. This speaks of our values and of what might make Cultivate stand out.
Which women have inspired you in your life?
My mom has been the biggest inspiration in my life. She is incredibly strong and smart but does not ever need to raise her voice or demand to be heard. People listen to her because of the amazing things she has to say. She thinks in revolutionary ways, she doesn’t need people to agree with her to be confident, and she stands up for those who have no voice. She’s an incredible woman.
