Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandy Humphrey.
Brandy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always been attracted to beauty and knew from a young age that I wanted my career to be within the beauty industry. While I was working in the juniors department at Macy’s, a position with Lancome had eventually opened up and I was fortunate enough to fill the spot. I was so excited! I finally got to explore the field that I had always been so curious about, and I didn’t have to fold Levis anymore. After about two years of working for Lancome, I had moved on to Macy’s Impulse and shortly thereafter, took a job with M.A.C. Cosmetics. I’ve grown so much as an artist in the short amount of time that I’ve been there and I can’t wait to see how I’ll progress in the future.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My parents had always believed that the medical field was the best option for me, so the nursing program was a bit of a mandatory requirement once I graduated from high school. After about a year of working in cosmetics, I knew that nursing wasn’t for me. Surprisingly my family has been super supportive of my decision and they continue to support to till this day.
My advice for other young women would be: don’t chase after practicality or heed everyone’s opinions of how to live your life. If you have a passion for something explore it and go after it. Other advice, Specifically towards women in the beauty industry, would be to stay curious and keep an open mind towards learning new techniques.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about your business – what should we know?
I take makeup appointments at M.A.C. Chula Vista and I’ve also begun doing independent work as well. As an artist, I’m different because I’m not stuck in a routine. I feel that a lot of makeup artists while extremely talented, end up going the same looks over and over again with different variations in color. I try to stay inconsistent, not in quality but in the outcome. I don’t want anyone of my clients looks to seem similar or like the previous person that was in my chair.
