Meet Trailblazer Brigitte Turner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brigitte Turner.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I run this little beauty biz called Bombshell Beauty by Brigitte. I’m a stay at home mom with two boys – 9 & 5 years old. I am literally the definition of “boy mom”. Aside from drowning in messes, dirty hands, ripped jeans, mud, and all the not so good smells you can imagine – I am beauty and makeup obsessed! Two years ago, I had a full-time career and was crushing it at work. I had been with the company for 13 years, and things were on fire. But…something was missing. My boys were in daycare, which was amazing because our daycare provider became like family. They were safe and loved, and taken care of better than I feel I could do at times! Mom guilt is a thing, y’all! One day, our daycare provider had a stroke. During the day. With the kids there. Thank God, her older daughters were there and were able to help with the kids. And, thank God my daycare provider made a full recovery. However, that was the end of her daycare business. She needed to slow down, and I needed to make the hardest decision of my life! Do I give up my career that I worked SO hard for to stay at home? I couldn’t bare to think of putting my boys in a different daycare setting. She had watched them both since they were born. My husband and I made the decision for me to become something I never thought I would qualify for… A stay at home mom.

Three months into the new job, I knew I needed something more. Yes, I loved having the time with my kids. There were so many things I missed out on over the years while they were in daycare. I was so grateful for the memories we were creating. But… I’m a working girl. Always have been, always will be. One day, one of my friends (who was getting married), invited me to this “beauty party”. I figured, why not. I love all things beauty and wanted to support my friend. I tried this lipstick (I wasn’t a lipstick girl since I could never find one that actually stayed on)… After one full day of not having to re-apply once, I was HOOKED! The next day, I started my own business and have never looked back.

I feel fulfilled being a stay at home mom. I feel fulfilled by working a business. It’s definitely not easy, but it’s what I was meant to do.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, but I appreciate that. Success shouldn’t come easy. It’s called “work” for a reason, right? Hard work and dedication allows you to achieve your goals. One of the biggest challenges I face is the old “work/life balance”. Because I own my own business, and because I work from home all while raising kids and attempting to keep my house somewhat presentable…some days it feels impossible to balance it all successfully! What I’ve learned, and still manage to fail at times is planning is key. Having a business plan and having a life plan is absolutely necessary to be successful in this type of business. Personally, I have two separate planners (I’m old school, I like to write things down). One for business and one for life. The days and weeks that I am on top of my planning, I am always so much more successful than the times I slack in that department.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Bombshell Beauty by Brigitte – what should we know?
I feel it’s fair to say I’m a bit of a rebel. I’ve got a foul mouth. I thoroughly enjoy drinking (responsibly, of course). And I really like to have fun. My husband would describe me as “a party girl”, and that may sound bad but it’s more than just partying. It’s engaging with people, laughing, creating relationships, friendships, and socializing. My favorite part of what I do is getting to know people. I always ping myself as socially awkward, I can be really shy until you get to know me. But at the same time, I thrive in social settings. I never sugar coat anything, and I appreciate someone who is the same with me. I guess that’s what sets me apart from others, I’m real. I don’t hide behind my makeup, I mean, honestly I rarely even wear any! I don’t try to pretend like I love my kids 100% of the time (Ok, I do love them always, but OMG if they don’t make me want to rip my hair out on the daily!). I love the products I sell, and I love making a difference in people’s lives. Doing it all as ME without pretending to be something I”m not is just so fun!

What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
If I could give a young woman just starting her career advice, it would without a doubt be: Do not compare yourself to anyone else out there. The competition is fierce, but what makes a successful businesswoman in this world is doing your own thing, being your own person, and definitely not comparing yourself to anyone else doing something similar. They’re who they are, and you are who you are. Find your niche, find your thing that separates you from everyone else, and roll with it! The rest will come naturally.
