Meet Trailblazer Carley Sengebusch

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carley Sengebusch.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My husband and I started Tyler & Carley Designs at the beginning of 2019. We have always had a passion for creating, Tyler builds guitars for a living, and I am a former photographer and have always loved digital design, calligraphy, and home decor. As a one-income family we were looking for ways to keep our family afloat financially in order for me to be able to stay home with our two-year-old daughter, Adaira. We had been inspired by other husband and wife teams who create wood-based products and dreamed of starting our own business.

After deciding to join forces and launch our business, we created a personalized maple & walnut hexagon ring dish at the beginning of January as our first product and fell in love with creating custom pieces. We now have over 45 different products including new designs of our Hexagon and Circle Ring Dishes, home decor pieces like solid walnut Key Holders, and have branched out into wood-based jewelry like Maple and Ebony Hoop Earrings. We just launched our first Hexagon Walnut Serving Tray that can be personalized with names, floral borders, and offer custom work via email.

We have come a long way this past year and wouldn’t be where we are today without all the incredible support we have received from family and friends! We have exciting plans for 2020 to update our equipment and have endless ideas for products. We are so thankful for our journey so far and can’t wait to see where this business takes us!

Has it been a smooth road?
Starting our business has had it’s challenges like any other new venture. At times it’s been a very bumpy ride – we have run into so many struggles with learning how to operate CNC machines, financially, personally, time management and all of the above! One of the best pieces of advice I received early on was to keep showing up every day. Looking back over the course of this year showing up meant not giving up when things got tough, pushing ourselves to learn and grow and to embrace change. I believe if you have a passion and just keep showing up everyday, good things will come!

We’d love to hear more about Tyler & Carley Designs.
The product we are most known for is our Hexagon Ring Dish and our wood-based jewelry. We offer personalized lid engravings with different fonts, floral borders, and beautiful template options celebrating milestones like engagements, weddings, anniversaries, or any occasion. Creating unique designs with customers has been one of the most rewarding parts of our business. We have loved being apart of someone’s special day and getting to work together on such meaningful pieces that I hope and imagine will be passed down generations.

We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
I have been so lucky to have been inspired by many female woodworkers in my personal life and through social media. As a dominantly male leading industry, social media has allowed the opportunity for women to share their businesses and create communities of support, resources, and encouragement which I hope to continue through our work.
