Today we’d like to introduce you to Devon Munro.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Devon. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have always been in love with photography. Ever since my parents gave me a little camera when I was around five years old, I have been taking pictures constantly. I also have always been very passionate about music so as I got older, I noticed all of these photographers working at concerts that I attended and decided that that was what I wanted to do. In 2018 I had the opportunity to photograph Vans Warped Tour in Phoenix, AZ. It was my first ever gig and one of the top ones on my bucket list. That day I made a lot of connections that got me to where I am now. I got involved with a small online music magazine called Give Me A Try in August of last year and have been with them ever since. I became the Head of Photography for the magazine and I’m also an Editor in Chief so I have worked my way up over time, doing what I love.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been mostly smooth but there have been little hiccups along the way where people would look down on me at shows because of my age and I have also had people make comments about the fact that I am a very young girl working in an industry that is prominently men. In November of last year, I was photographing a show in Tucson and the venue security would not let me into the photo pit but they had let an older male photographer in which was very frustrating because I had never experienced anything like that really. I have now learned to just ignore it as long as it doesn’t interfere with the quality of my work and I feel like that is the best way to react.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about your business – what should we know?
I specialize in concert and music photography but I also dabble in portrait photography because I feel like they are vastly different and both great ways to express your creativity. I am proud of how far I have come in the past year and a half. I never thought I would make it as far as I have or do as much as I have at this age especially because right now most of my friends don’t even know what they want to do with their lives and I feel like I have it all figured out for the most part.
Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
Yes, I was raised in a house where I was constantly surrounded by creativity. My dad plays guitar and was always playing different kinds of music as I was growing up and my mom is very artistic so she was always working on one project or another. I feel like that definitely drove me to pursue the things that I am now because they were such big parts of my life as a child.
