Meet Trailblazer Diamond Smith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Diamond Smith.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Back in high school, I had a friend constantly tell me “you have a photographers Eye” I had no idea what she meant. At the time, I wanted to graduate and head straight to cooking school. As time went on, my young, indecisive mind took the thought of college completely out, until I connected with that same friend at a photo shoot where she handed me her camera and I fell in love. Instantly, I figured I can go get a degree but in Film (that was very random) then picked up a photography class and thought to myself “this is very slow”, so I then became self-taught so that eventually, I could turn my new found passion into a business. Fast forward to today, aside from being a barista at Starbucks my photography business is going very well.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
This journey has been up and down, mainly up because I look at being creative as something therapeutic. It’s nothing like physically creating something that was only a thought. My best advice for young women starting their journey is to keep going no matter what may seem to be in your way navigate. So many things have tried to stop me but I simply navigated through and blocked anything that could possibly try to separate me from my passion. That means ignore negativity basically.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
Being a photographer is a challenge (for some) because going into it, you have to be ready for whatever energy your working with and still keep a comfortable environment. I get told by a lot of models that they don’t feel intimidated or they don’t feel like they have to be “picture perfect” off-screen as well. I guess that goes with my natural hospitality that it’s easy for me to let my models feel comfortable as if I’m a friend taking a really good pic of them.

What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
If there is anything in your mind telling you that leap of faith isn’t worth it, ignore it! You’ll be fine just create for you! Work for you! And know yourself enough to block what’s not best for YOU!
