Today we’d like to introduce you to Diana Andrews.
Diana, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Since 2005, I’ve been refining my approach to hair and creating a ‘signature’ as unique as a fingerprint. As a native San Diegan, my journey to make people feel and look great started locally. Although, my obsession with hair developed long before the day I entered the industry. I was that kid with scissors and markers (the tools of the trade), and a client list as long as Mattel’s doll inventory. After college, I found myself still dreaming of life behind the chair. The day I entered the doors of cosmetology school, I never looked back.
I had the privilege of getting support from my boss early on in my career. I’ve traveled to New York, L.A., and San Francisco to master techniques that are fundamental to recreating today’s understated hairstyles and colors.
It’s been amazing to see this industry evolve. With the emergence of social media, trends and techniques are even more accessible to the curious mind. It wasn’t as easy a decade ago. I find myself saying things like “back in my day…” Now, we’re the golden age of hairdressing.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This is a very layered question. My first response is to adapt or die! That sounds extreme, but is how we evolve. It’s easier said than done. Thinking outside your comfort zone is the key to excelling in your field. My longtime salon home stalled because the nature of the industry changed and the owner was resistant to change. There are always new tools and tricks. Let technology work for you. If you don’t, your competition will.
Another obstacle is the work/life balance. Having kids definitely changed how much energy I could devote to my career. Simply put: where you focus your energy is where you get your results. I adapted my work schedule and clientele adapted along with it.
Lastly, be authentic! Social media has conditioned us to be perfect all the time. If you are honest and real, clients will be honest and real in return. Some people are naturally willing to put themselves out there. Personally, it’s a challenge. I’m more of a wallflower. When I’m in my element behind the chair, I’m comfortable.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I’ve tried to approach hair the only way I know how: Unforced. With every new head of hair, I ask one simple question, “What would nature do?” Inspired by the sun-kissed hair of childhood I work to mimic the look that says to the world “I get to play outside… a lot.”
My approach to styling is no different. Using scissors or straight razor, I find where hair wants to be by working with its natural movement.
Specializes in: color, blonding, correction, classic cutting, razor cutting, sarcasm.
Hobbies: traveling, reading the first half of a book, buying useless stuff.
We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
A huge barrier for women? We aren’t allowed to be vulnerable. We have to show the world that we can do it all and have it all and be all things to all people. The short truth: we don’t have to listen to that noise.
