Meet Trailblazer Donika Brown and Myra Hollis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Donika Brown and Myra Hollis.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Donika and Myra. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Black Womxn Healing Pod originally began as Black Women’s Healing Circle at San Diego State University in 2016. The purpose of this circle is to provide a space for Black feminine centered individuals to build, grow, explore identities, promote positive and healing within self and other black womxn. With the Black Womxn Healing Pod, we plan to continue this work but while making it accessible to those across the country. In addition to the podcast, we will be hosting several events throughout the year 2020 in order to interact with our listeners and promote the community.

Has it been a smooth road?
Yes and no. Doing this with a partner takes away some of the difficulties that would probably be even more challenging if doing them alone. Some of the struggles were figuring out how to even get a podcast started. We did a lot of research, read articles, went to workshops, and created a detailed plan for our podcast. Now that we have consistent content and guests for our listeners, we are now transitioning into having the face to face meetups in different cities across the US. Both of us live in different cities in California (Myra; San Diego, Donika; Inglewood), so we have to be creative by using zoom links, phone calls, and monthly face-to-face meet-ups to work on the podcast. The smooth aspect of our podcast has been having each other. We are both super motivated, work efficiently, and get things done! Some advice to young women on this journey would be to utilize your support system and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Go to networking events, do your own research, take breaks as needed, and keep positive energy around you.

We’d love to hear more about Black Womxn Healing Podcast.
We are two aspiring Marriage and Family Therapist’s (MFT’s). Donika is closer to licensure and Myra is a recent graduate (August 2019). Together, we have created Black Womxn Healing Podcast, a podcast that intentionally connects with womxn across the world through their speaker and in 2020 in person. The purpose of Black Womxn Healing Podcast is to create space so that Black Womxn know that they are not alone and there is support for them out there. Our listeners have weekly access to topics that Black Womxn face daily and the addition of the Black Womxn Healing Circles to process in person with other womxn. Our podcast discusses mental wellness in a relatable sense but still informative for continued growth and healing. Overall, our podcast is unique for our practical takeaways and in-person meetups.

We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
Women and in particular Black Women continue to thrive in greatness through education, business ventures, self-love, and overall success. Despite our constant efforts, we are still often looked over due to microaggressions, patriarchal systems, and those who are intimidated by the power of the feminine. Below Myra and Donika give our most important piece of advice to women leaders:

Myra: Stay focused and seek out help. Often times, we run away from asking for help when ultimately that can be the best thing that you end up doing for yourself.

Donika: A little a day goes a long way, just keep pushing even when you think nothing is happening.
