Today we’d like to introduce you to Esther Jin.
Esther, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My dad used to snuggle me and my siblings at night and tell me stories of “Fairy Esty and her sisters.” I’d then make up my own stories in my head about “Huddy and his pet panda” to my baby brother Hudson. I have been fascinated with the art of storytelling since I was small enough to lay in my dad’s arms. After I picked up a camera in 6th grade, my fascination has evolved into a passion through photography. Over the years, I’ve shot sports, musicals, school events, and engagements, with my specialty being portraits. I’m still obsessed with storytelling and plan to pursue a career involving it after I finish high school next year.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
People always told me: “Have fun being poor with that job.” “You’re so young. You don’t actually know what you want in life.” “Give up and do something useful.” “You’re not good enough.” As a high-schooler, it was heartbreaking to hear my dreams being shut down with discouraging words. I feel constant pressure to please the people around me, adhere to their expectations, and follow society’s guidelines of what I should and should not do. But I’ve realized that none of that matters. In the end, the most important thing is that I’m happy with myself and my decisions.
My advice: Listen to your heart and pursue your passion. Work hard and enjoy the journey. And lastly, negativity towards you = motivation to become even better.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
In 6th grade, I began using an old Canon 20D. Initially, I had to drag my little brother outside to model for me, and eventually, my photography began improving. I made an Instagram, made a website, and began to take photo classes in school. My small passion led me to fantastic opportunities. I never thought I would experience, from shooting photos of my friends to CIF games to engagements.
I’m passionate about taking portraits! I love making people look good. When they look good, they feel amazing. To me, there are few things more rewarding than getting an “I never knew I could look this bomb” text after a shoot. Everyone has a story, and I want to showcase it through my photography. Telling people’s stories and evoking certain emotions through my photos are my goals.
What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
Nowadays, there is so much pressure on young women to conform to society’s expectations. Our decisions are inspected under a microscope; even our choices of clothing are challenged. Don’t conform! Outperform the people blind to your vision. You are unique, passionate, and able to do whatever you set your mind to.
