Meet Trailblazer Evelyn Sandoval

Today we’d like to introduce you to Evelyn Sandoval.

Evelyn, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up around the beauty industry since I was a little kid. My mom was a hairstylist and had her own little salon in our house in Tijuana, Mexico. Also, one of my eldest cousins was a hairstylist/makeup artist and was co-owner of a salon. I would always love being around them it was fascinated me the process and an end result. But mostly, what I would love seeing was how these women’s attitudes change making them more confident. So, I grew up seeing how my mom and cousin would create magic and make women feel amazing.

I’ve always been a very artsy child if I was not drawing on my walls, I was painting my face. I decided to pursue a career in communications, but while there I found my self more interested in what happens behind, so I decided Instead to take makeup classes. I took a course on stage makeup and bridal this made me feel like a kid again and felt like I had finally found what I really wanted to do. And I have not stop ever since while I service all types of clientele I can definitely say that my “job” does not feel like that. It’s more like play time and it takes me back to my childhood and just like my mom and cousin I get to make people feel amazing.

I have been now a makeup artist for eight years and a licensed cosmetologist for six. I have worked so hard from being assistant with no pay to now working on commercials. It’s definitely being a hard journey that I’m still working on but it’s worth it because this is something I have
passion for and dedication.

Has it been a smooth road?
It’s never been a smooth road. When you decide to be a professional makeup artist the first thing is to create a professional portfolio with professional photos. Well, the very first two years of my career I did a lot of trade shoots which means I did not get paid. And I also got a lot of no when I tried to get commercial work because I did not have experience. But at the end, all this that seems to go nowhere helped me a lot it gave me experience and had the chance to work with a lot of photographers that later would hire me for work. When it comes to this industry, patience is the key and willingness to learn from other professionals, this will lead you to meet people that may be in the future will hire you.

We’d love to hear more about Makeup artistry by evy sandoval.
I’m a professional makeup artist I specialize in commercial and bridal makeup.
I’m known for making people look amazing on cámara both women and men.
What sets me aside is that I don’t see this as a job, so you can tell I have a passion and I’m always happy when I’m either on set or on location for a wedding.

We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
Just like in any other industry it can get over saturated and it can be easy to get lost in the multitude. But always remember there can be a million makeup artist but only one like you.
