Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Trevino-Timm.
So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I attended Marinello’s Beauty School in Hillcrest. I enjoyed my time there but I knew that the knowledge learned was only scratching the surface. While in beauty school, I was fortunate to be able to get additional classes only available to licensed hairdressers. This additional training gave me the confidence to excel. Once I obtained my license, I was able to get an assistant position at Tops, an upscale salon in Mission Hills, Eventually, I was able to transition to an independent contractor, working at Tops for a total of 11 years. As the youngest person on the floor, I was taken under the wing of the more experienced stylists which was a tremendous help. Building your clientele is just part of the equation. Excellent and skillful work and continuing education always add to your capabilities. You are never too experienced to keep learning and always try to remain humble.
Currently, I working at Salon Radiance in downtown La Mesa. It’s a great area that is always changing and reinventing itself.
Has it been a smooth road?
There have been some struggles for sure. I think I started later than most; in my early 20’s. My late start was due to attending college first while not knowing what direction to take. A part-time job at a glamour photography studio as a receptionist introduced me to a stylist who piqued my interest in the possibility of a career in hairdressing. The earlier you know this is your career path, you can start working toward your goal as it could take some time.
For the beginning of any new hairdresser’s journey, I recommend starting as an assistant. Being an assistant taught me the kind of a hairdresser I wanted to be. You will learn some desirable traits like discipline, professionalism and organization, not to mention that you will be obtaining knowledge from a more experienced stylist.
We’d love to hear more about Salon Radiance.
With the training I had early in my career I would consider myself a Color Specialist more than anything else. I love the artistic aspect of color correction, highlighting and balayage. It is one of the most enjoyable parts of my job. Haircutting is also something I really love doing. Creating big transformations is fun for me and my clients. A great haircut or color can give my clients confidence and a new outlook on life.
I try to be there for my clients and work is my number one priority. I take pride that many of my clients have been coming to me for twenty years or more. Going the extra mile is something that is very important to me.
Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
I recommend having an Instagram account which is a great advertising tool because you are able to capture examples of your work and preserve them for the future. You can show your creative side and it is a fun way to use your photography skills. It can generate new clients and giving you tools to connect with other hairdressers and educators. It is great that your work can be seen by anyone around the world.
