Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Olea.
Karen, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up watching my mom sew. She made my Halloween costumes, homecoming dresses and all of my dance recital outfits. I would visit thrift stores with my mom where she would buy affordable pieces and sew them.
At a younger age, I paid little attention to what was sold at a thrift store. Fast forward to now, I am so glad I experienced that creative side of my mom. She has influenced me to sew and become the thrifty fashionista I am today.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I don’t think there’s ever been a rough or smooth road to where I am today. It’s simply what I love and enjoy doing. It’s about taking it easy, staying true to myself and my sense of style. It’s sharing my passion with my following that brings me joy. It’s about receiving awesome messages saying how I helped them find really cool thrift finds.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about your business – what should we know?
I have had the opportunity to collaborate with many companies, including the Salvation Army Thrift Store. I have hosted a “Thrift With Me” event at one of their locations where I helped others find affordable on-trend garments. From writing blog posts with helpful thrift tips to IGTV videos on thrift finds, I hope to inspire with the message that you don’t need to spend a lot of money to be in style.
I take pride in spreading a bigger message that is to be confident in your own skin and to feel fabulous in a $20 outfit.
Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
Collaborating with others has helped spark inspiration for my content. Networking with people who share common interests and supporting others with the same passions can keep one motivated.
