Today we’d like to introduce you to Kera Murphy.
Kera, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Upstate, NY, raised by a single mother along with my older sister, Kate. We grew up with very little and the money that my mom did make was the result of hard work and long hours. I quickly got used to hustling to make a buck and learned that a good work ethic would carry over and I could accomplish any goal. I continued to persevere through school and complete my diploma early so I could start pursuing my dream of being an entrepreneur. I went to school for cosmetology then massage theraphy and took business courses. A few years later, I started my own boutique salon. I really enjoyed my day to day but longed for more involvement in the business and financial side, so I began learning the operations side of the business. Fast forward a few years, an opportunity came up for my business partner and I to purchase a health club on the West Coast. I fell in love with the personal interaction with clients and employees but also seeing the direct results from using different marketing platforms, being involved with the community and giving back through my non- profit, Promising Future Fund. My drive and love for local business growth has pushed me to also acquire SanDiego.com, as of two years ago. I continue to fulfill my creative side in my boutique salon, specializing in hair color and extensions.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Easy? No. Worth it? Every single day! I think my biggest struggles have been finding balance; balance between my growing careers, my personal life and taking the time to check out and relax. I had to really take a step back and look at how far I’ve come for me to be able to not feel guilty about taking the time to slow down and live in the moment. The west coast mentality of catching the sunsets, yoga, hiking and just enjoying everything San Diego has to offer has made the transition much easier.
Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I enjoy helping people through their journey of looking, feeling and living better. I work with clients on an individual basis and am able to figure out their needs and how we can work together to help achieve their goals. I am very passionate about working with the community to build awareness and raise money for children and animals in need.
Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
My mother has always been my motivation for personal and professional growth. She has always instilled the idea that if I can dream it, I can do it. Her positive outlook on life, despite life’s challenges, is the most inspirational thing I’ve ever witnessed. I have also been lucky enough to surround myself with mentors from every different walk of life and in every industry. They have all taught me very valuable lessons. I would say my peers and employees continue to teach me how to be a better leader and how to continue to grow with them cohesively as a unit. We institute the culture of a family environment.
