Meet Trailblazer Kevin Winger

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Winger.

Kevin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up in Ojai, Ca and was exposed to a great community of artists. My parents placed me in private painting lessons at a young age. I’ve always had a creative outlet in my life; music, painting, photography and cooking. It all came together after I decided to return to college and pursue an environmental science degree.

After a few years of courses I took a painting elective course, the instructor sought me out to include me in the student show and both submissions sold! To instructors at the college! After that, I changed my major to my first love, art. In my final semester, the opportunity came to open a gallery in Liberty Station’s burgeoning arts district.

The day after viewing the space I submitted my lease package and I’ve now been a successful full-time artist and gallery owner for 9+ years!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
My creations are oil paintings on panel, very saturated colors and deep, luxurious textures that border on sculptural. I paint solely with painting knives and other sculpting tools. Most of the time I allow the process to drive the works, I start by getting some color on the panel and submit to intuition and expression.

My work range from pure abstraction to a limited range of representative subjects; trees, nautical and abstracted florals. The process of painting is a very joyful one. I hope people are moved and can connect in their own personal way with the colors and compositions I create.

We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
I’m a bit of a loner and have tried avoiding collaboration. I can’t say why exactly, it has just evolved that way. I have little advice other than to abandon everything you’ve been taught about art and forge a unique path that sets your work apart from others’.
