Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyla Santillano.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kyla. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Spotlight Studios was born in 2005. I moved to San Diego from New York City and hit the ground running. The first year it was me and one other artist. I soon realized I needed to always be growing and learning from my fellow photographers. This lead me to open the doors and invite others to join me. Over the 13 years, we have been in business we have grown to 5 photographers, each with their own unique style. We also have 3 photo consultants that handle all the bookings and help clients prepare for their sessions. Two years ago, we also added both wedding videography and wedding coordination. Our clients love us! We are there for them every step of the way, whether it is trusting us to document their family or plan their wedding.
It has always been my dream to create a place for artists to learn from each other. We are structured as an art
co-op; a cooperative society and business that supports one another. Today, we offer family, lifestyle, and wedding services. Each year, we are blessed to photograph between 400-500 families and couples. And some of our families have been with us for over 8 years! It’s so magical to be trusted to document those special moments and to be let into their lives!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My advice to young woman entrepreneurs – always keep working, don’t get discouraged by the little setbacks! You get what you put in, so if you work at it every day you will achieve everything you set out to do. Make a list of your goals at the beginning of every year and a daily list of the small easy tasks. Then just cross them off one at a time. Writing things down always helps organize your goals and keeps them in your mind’s eye. Also, surround yourself with people who encourage and uplift you! And, if they don’t, find new friends LOL!
I have found that being a positive happy person and surrounding yourself with people who support you makes dreams come true! Plus, you need to love what you do! Because it’s going to be a lot of hard work!

Our photographers aim to ensure that your wedding and portraiture are captured in a stunning and stylistic way. Bringing high fashion and editorial flair to your photography. We pride ourselves on providing an experience that is both personalized and intimate, we always strive to understand your vision.
So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
We are mostly all woman at our studio and we are always looking for more amazing artists. Woman make great family and wedding photographers! We have an eye for detail and are usually great with kids! 🙂
At Spotlight Studios, we offer a few work programs. Depending on previous experience some of our artists go through a short training period and are then excepted into the studio, while others will start by doing an internship and then have the opportunity to advance.
