Meet Trailblazer Madison Jane

Today we’d like to introduce you to Madison Jane.

Madison, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Originally, I was a theater geek while growing up in Orange County. Until we moved to San Diego where my high school at the time didn’t have more than a small drama class. I lacked enthusiasm when it came to school, I tried home schooling which didn’t help much but allowed me time to have a job at a makeup counter. Something I loved most about theater was becoming someone else, the hair the makeup the costumes all sparked my creativity. Someone suggested I try my luck with beauty school. I’m so grateful my mom has always been my biggest support. She allowed me to test out of high school during my junior year and attend Oceanside College of Beauty. I received my cosmetology license in 2007 at the age of 17.

A couple years later, I met my pal Isaac Roberts who took me under his wacky wings and became the greatest mentor I never meant to have. The hair world has been good to me. I’ve traveled internationally for luxury haircare lines teaching up styling and haircutting. I’ve had the honor of being the key hairstylist for multiple runway shows during New York Fashion Week. I never dreamt I’d see my hair art on TV and in magazines and inspiring others to create art. It’s absolutely incredible the amount of healing others can receive from a little hair love. I’ve also found my passions and hobbies coming full circle in the form of entertaining. Thankfully working as a full-time hairstylist has allowed me to support being a showgirl on the side. rhinestones are not cheap.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s been a fairly smooth road. A lot of incredible opportunities have come along with just being in the right space at the right time. Only in the past few years I’ve struggled with what direction I want to take my career, so many options! As a creative I struggle a lot with not getting in my own way, I find it’s easy to get down on myself especially while comparing myself with others online. I try to remember we’re all on our own individual paths for some reason greater than ourselves and we are all worthy of success and happiness. My support system has been the most important part of my journey, surrounding myself with my number one fans and those I aspire to be like and respect. Honorable people who strive for integrity, authenticity, and who have a good time while kicking ass.

We’d love to hear more about Madison Jane Hair.
As a hairstylist, dancer, and yoga instructor I find all of my worlds colliding in the most fascinating ways. Behind the chair at Radar Salon I specialize in hair color, cuts, and hairstyling. A lot of folks know me for my love of vintage hairstyling which has led me into the burlesque world over the past few years. My yoga practice has taught me a lot about grounding and mindfulness, I feel I can provide a safe and healing space for my guests. Most recently I’ve been focusing more on advance color techniques and extension services as well as MJ’s Updudes where I give men with long hair the most glamorous hairdos.

Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
I’m forever grateful to have stumbled upon an insanely talented and hardworking mentor whom I still get to work alongside today. Qualities I believe all great mentors can carry include wanting to succeed and rise to the top with others not just solo, humility, the desire to continue to learn and grow, patience, acceptance and benevolence. Social media is a great networking tool to get in touch with amazing people. I believe real life connections make the biggest impact. I’ve experienced good luck meeting influential people by attending classes and events in and out of the hair world.
