Meet Trailblazer Marina Reed

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marina Reed.

Marina, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My artistry story started at four years of age, I was introduced to the world of art through my dad. I grew up painting and watching him paint so, naturally, it was there where the art seed was planted. All through grade school, I was known for being an artist. All my peers always admired my drawings! I took art classes all through middle school and I loved it… it was my favorite subject.

I never really knew makeup, until I was about 20, I started noticing other women wear eyeshadow and lipstick. My mother never really wore makeup, so I was never really attentive to it. I was looking through a magazine one day, and I loved one of the model’s makeup. I still remember to this day, it was a beautiful shimmery smoky brown eyeshadow. She was bronzed and had a nude lip. So, I showed my husband Kenny the photo and next thing I know, he went out bought me some makeup palettes. Since he saw how enthusiastic I was about makeup.

At first I only had a few brushes. I think only four, it was a set from Avon. Everyday I would practice my eyeshadow, and I quickly noticed it was so similar to painting on canvas. I learned quickly and next thing I know, I was being asked about my eyeshadow by complete strangers while I was out shopping. After a year of falling completely in love with makeup, I started to get asked by people to have me do their makeup. I was afraid to do it on others, as I had only known how to do it on myself. I quickly got over my fear, and I did a couple of faces.

I took a beginner’s makeup course a few years later and received my first certificate. I received another certificate a few years after my first. Now I’m happy to say I am twice certified. By then, I was doing makeup on the side just for fun and would only ask for tips. Year by year, my makeup collection grew as I quickly got noticed on Instagram. I was one of a couple of girls to introduce makeup to the app. Makeup companies started to reach out to me and they offered to send me the product in exchange for photos and product mentions on my page.

I started to attend makeup expos and would meet all the makeup companies there… we connected and I still work with some of them to this day. I started freelancing and doing some bridal work. Started to get published in magazines, and last year I was voted The Knot’s best of 2020. The knot is a huge bridal website that introduces hundreds and thousands of vendors to future brides. So to have won the best of 2020 was just so grand for me. I take pride in my work and I take every session personally, I believe that is what has gotten me where I am today. I truly love makeup, I see it as an art and it really is my passion.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I am a big believer that hard work pays off. Nothing great comes easy, and easy work isn’t great! There have been many many obstacles in my artistry career, but I’ve learned to accept mistakes and to get right back up, and try again. My advice would be to just dive deep into your passion, literally work every day! You’ll be so tightly wrapped in it that you’ll become one person with your craft. Whatever your goal is, you’ll be sure to achieve it; if and only if you work hard!!! Be resourceful, be compassionate, be proud, be honest, be innovative, and be everything you’d dream of!

We’d love to hear more about GlamTrashMakeup.
I have a broad spectrum in art, I think because I’m naturally an artist, I’m great at makeup, which is what I specialize in, bridal and any special occasion makeup. I also offer tutorials free of charge on my social media. I’m a content creator and I work with many makeup companies to create looks in order to inspire others. I’ve been doing makeup for over 13 years now, and I’ve seen and tried many many techniques, I’ve seen it all! I believe my keen eye for art sets me apart. I can come up with looks just by looking at a flower or at a soda can. I get inspired quickly and can create looks at the top of my head. My looks range from natural to extremely dramatic. I’m very proud of my artistry and how I’ve learned to mold myself around the trends throughout the years in what now is a saturated field.
