Meet Trailblazer Michelle Nguyen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Nguyen.

Michelle, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was in the casino industry for about 13 years as a blackjack dealer and also a dual rate supervisor. I gave up weekends and missed every holiday with my first son, Christopher because I always had to work. I also missed a lot of his basketball games due to scheduling conflicts. I had my 2nd son, Kai 2 years ago. I wanted to have more free time with my toddler and be able to go to Chris’s basketball games. Being a single mom is hard but I wanted to be there at every game. Just like me, he worked hard and is a starting point guard for his travel ball and high school team. His dream is to get into a D1 school. So, yes, I finally decided to quit and open my own business. It was very scary at first. I had no idea how many brow artists there were but I learned not to be afraid of the competition. The beauty industry might be saturated but at the end of the day, we are all working towards the same goals. Just stay humble, work hard, and everything will fall into place.

I’ve had tons of support from family, friends, and clients in San Diego and also from afar! I feel so blessed to have clients fly in from different cities and states just to see me. Or even make a 2-3 hour drive. The one thing they always say is that I’m very personable, sociable… make them laugh and also make them feel comfortable. And that’s how my business started growing. Referrals and the powder of social media. I’m not where I want to be yet but this is only the beginning! I don’t like to fail so I will keep working hard to keep my business growing and hope that the sacrifices I made will pay off by having my son accepted into a D1 college. Also thank you for being interested in my story. It truly means a lot and I feel so grateful!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It wasn’t always easy and still isn’t. Although I took classes and certified for semi-permanent cosmetics.. there is still much to learn and I am constantly researching. Always trying to learn new techniques.. practicing.. and just dedication. You have to be dedicated to your business and also network as much as possible. You have to put yourself out there especially on social media. People found me through hashtags which I couldn’t believe! Yes, there are also trolls, I don’t let them get to me. For the women starting their journey… I would say do your research. Not only do you need certifications but also need licensing and permits.. all depending on the city you are in. But never give up. Don’t ever think an industry is over saturated. There’s enough room for everyone and you just have to shine.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Brownatomy – what should we know?
I do semi-permanent makeup. Ombré Powder Brows, Microblading, Signature Brows and Blush Lip Embroidery. I will be offering more services soon! I think I’ve gotten more popular for my Ombré brows and also the Signature Brows. I think what sets me apart.. from what my clients tell me.. is that I’m humble..nice.. sociable and make them laugh so that it turns to make them feel more comfortable and less nervous. Also because I take my time. I don’t rush and I’m a perfectionist. I want them to look and feel beautiful once they leave. That’s what I’m proud of the most. Is when I can make them feel even more beautiful and less insecure about themselves. It’s crazy how eyebrows can really change your life, attitude, and self-esteem. My clients who never took selfies will send me one every day! I love getting pics of them!

Do you recommend any apps, books or podcasts that have been helpful to you?
Books I’m currently reading are educational ones I read with my toddler, but maybe I should read up more on basketball IQ! I’m also always on social media just doing research or watching videos and learning techniques or new products and classes. But honestly, what helps me do my best at work and in life are my kids.
