Today we’d like to introduce you to Mona Lee.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
At the beginning of 2017, I originally aspired to become a music therapist, since I was about to graduate university. My friend, Miles, had a very compelling argument about why I should start photography. The next day, I purchased my camera and pursued into something I knew nothing about. With the support of my friends and YouTube, I learned so much about the craft and grew a lot to be the person I am today.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not every road will be smooth. The biggest struggle I faced was with I did not know how to approach my camera and style of editing. Also, majority of the community did not take me seriously since I was young and a girl. Majority of the photographers I knew was not really willing to teach or mentor me in my journey. Not a lot of the photographers in the community are women. I feel so lucky to have met my friend/guide, Edward Batres. He ignored the stereotypes and really took in my lack of knowledge, which led to him bridging my career. My advice for young women is to find your mentor. Finding the right mentor will not always be easy, but don’t let those struggles force you to give up your goals. Set those goals and make sure to follow through 100%!
We’d love to hear more about colourandphotos.
I am a photographer based in Southern California. I mostly specialize in vibrant portraits. What sets me apart from most photographers is that I bring out as many colors in my photos as possible. I am proud to be a young woman in the photography community to be successful within a year.
Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
My mom is the role model that I followed to become the person I am today. She always taught me that if I really worked hard and focused on the right path that I can achieve what I want later in life. My successes are due to her wise philosophy.
