Niki, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As a young teen, I was always interested in makeup and I pictured myself working on movie sets in Hollywood. Once I decided to pursue that dream I realized I needed to get my esthetics license and 600 hours later, my dream shifted. It became more about wanting to help others feel their best selves. Right out of school I started out at a small wax chain and fine-tuned my waxing skills. After almost a year doing that I realized I wanted more. I had an opportunity to move to San Diego from where I grew up in Huntington Beach and lucky for me, I happened on a beauty boutique called Highbrow Beauty. For reasons beyond me, the owner Beverly, took me under her wing. With only two years of experience at the time, she truly transformed who I was as an esthetician. At HighBrow Beauty I have complete creative freedom. I’ve never felt more confident and truly happy than I do now.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Great things never come easy. I definitely considered quitting a few times in the beginning and then again when I had to start over in a new city. This industry is very oversaturated, and it can be tough to stand out. When you can throw a rock down the street and hit 5 other spas, it’s important to remember your passion and why you started. Let your work speak for itself and set yourself apart in your relationships with your clients. My clients are some of my favorite people and I owe them a lot of my success. Stay confident in yourself. You’ve worked hard to hone your craft and no one can take that away from you.

HighBrow Beauty is a premiere beauty boutique and we all specialize in ways elevate your eyes. I offer all things from brow waxing and eyelash extensions to spray tans and everything in between. While I still offer those services and give my full attention to them, I’m really focusing on cosmetic tattooing. Right now I offer Microshading and Microblading, and I plan to offer lip blush and eyeliner soon as well. If Microshading is a new term for you, allow me to explain. Think Microblading, but a softer more gentle approach. This service is great for all ages (18+), skin types and lifestyles. Using a machine I implement pigment into the skin that will last up to 2 years and heal like a soft powder makeup fill in giving you a youthful and natural way to have life proof brows. I feel most proud of my journey in cosmetic tattooing. It was something I was definitely intimidated by but thanks to my fiancé Ben, who’s a tattooer at Lucky’s Tattoo Parlor, he pushed me to challenge myself and has supported me every step of the way. I feel what sets me apart from others is the way I relate to my clients. I pride myself on being caring, personable, and attentive to all of my client’s needs. I value what they do for me and my career and I want to make sure they feel my appreciation with every visit.
So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well-positioned for?
I don’t believe there are any limitations for women in the workforce today. Given that I’m in a female-dominated work environment, I feel that I’m in a unique position to pursue leadership roles and perfect my craft without gender restricting obstacles that women face in other professions. In addition, working with women allows me to focus on lifting each other up and supporting their business while creating my own.
