Today we’d like to introduce you to Perla Chase.
Perla, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
When I was 17-years-old, a college classmate came up to me and asked if she could take my picture. That was basically the beginning of everything. I would never in a million years consider myself a “model”, but eventually photo shoots and creative projects became my new normal.
In 2015, I decided to join the digital age and post my photo shoots on Instagram. After many recommendations from friends and supporters, I took a chance and launched my beauty and fashion blog, YourGirlChase.Com in 2017. Starting my blog opened many doors. I was invited to attend local events, collaborated with brands, and established a unique following with San Diego creatives and influencers.
Fast forward to today: I am 23-years-old and YourGirlChase has expanded into the podcast world! In October of 2018, I introduced my audience to YourGirlChase: The Podcast, which is available on iTunes, Spotify, and Anchor. The podcast showcases a liberated, personal side of me with content focusing on everything from mental health awareness, pop culture, finances, dating, and essentially anything I couldn’t talk about when I was just a “beauty blogger.” While I still post regular beauty and fashion- related content on the blog, YourGirlChase: The Podcast has become my new passion project and it’s been a lot of fun to manage both.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I don’t think any creative journey is a smooth journey.
Believe it or not, some of the greatest highlights of the YourGirlChase story happened during the lowest points of my life. At the peak of my creative journey, I found myself working an unfulfilling job, struggling with mental health issues, and stuck in an unhealthy relationship with a partner that didn’t support the growth of YourGirlChase and (to add insult to injury) didn’t find my newfound confidence attractive.
Ironic, right?
In my case, the only obstacles and challenges I faced in the past came from my personal life. YourGirlChase was a spontaneous success and it became my escape. Because my everyday life was so unsatisfying, I made it my purpose to create a world where everything was roses and aesthetic photo filters.
Alright – so let’s talk about your blog. Tell us about YourGirlChase – what should we know?
YourGirlChase is a bi-weekly lifestyle blog and podcast. I utilize my YourGirlChase platform, along with my formal business background, to attract new clients for the freelance marketing services I offer. My specialties include content creation, social media management, copywriting/editing, and public relations.
What role has luck (good luck or bad luck) played in your life and business?
I have a very complicated relationship with the concept of “luck.” I’m not too sure that luck played a big part in the success of YourGirlChase.
Just to provide some background on my upbringing: I was raised by immigrant parents who came to the US in the late ’80s and basically had to hustle for everything. My parents left behind their family and friends to establish a better life in a new country, so I don’t believe I can attribute any of their accomplishments to luck.
The best thing I inherited from them was their work ethic. I know exactly what it’s like to work 50 – 75-hour weeks and grind to create your own opportunities. So, I guess my short answer is no. I don’t think luck had anything to do with my brand, but I do consider myself lucky to have been born into an environment where hard work was the only option.
