Meet Trailblazer Sabrina Schlesinger

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sabrina Schlesinger.

Sabrina, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always had a passion for people and, the idea of being a world changer fascinated me when I was a teenager and young adult. So, my life has been a series of finding ways to enrich the lives of people around me.

After I got married, had children, and moved to the San Diego area, my unique purpose felt like it was getting even more clear.

If you opened me up and could see inside my heart, you would find evidence to see families succeed. Not in the “get rich” kind of succeeding, but families that are emotionally healthy, a safe place, kids that know who they are and why they born, marriages who modeled honor, respect, and faithfulness. I imagined what our world would look like if more families and marriages were whole… not perfect, but built on a foundation that is secure and will weather the storms life brings our way.

The thought came to me… if I really want to be a world changer, then the change must start with me, my marriage, and my family at home.

And so birthed MOMMENTOR.org, where myself and a number of other like-minded moms give practical advice on parenting. Because we know what it is like to be alone, at home, feeling trapped and unsure of what to do in certain situations. And with a growing number of young moms who have disconnected relationships with their parents, the need is even greater to give tried and true advice that works.

We deal with a lot more than the practical, in fact, where we shine is dealing with the emotional and mental battles that moms face. Anyone can google how to potty train, but how do you face perceived failures as a mom? How do you handle depression and anxiety? What do you do when your parenting choices are being judged? These questions and SO MUCH MORE are the kinds of topics we tackle.

And it didn’t stop there. My husband and I, who also pastor an amazing church in North County San Diego, host two podcasts. One is called Parenting on the Go, and the other is titled, Marriage on the Go. They are quick 15-20 minute podcasts full of advice, humor, real-life struggles, and how to navigate them together.

We believe no mom should be left behind, that our family and marriages are our greatest ministry, and that if we can get the family right, we can get the nation right.

Has it been a smooth road?
I didn’t know a lot about blogging, podcasting, growing a social media following, and creating a website. But one thing I determined was I wasn’t going to wait for perfection before I started. I knew there would be lessons learned along the way, and that was fine by me. I read articles, listened to successful people who are doing what I wanted to do, and set deadlines and goals so I couldn’t back out.

The advice I would give anyone wanting to enter the blogging and podcast world is BE YOU!!! People know when you aren’t authentic. And this world doesn’t need more clones of other people, we need you to be exactly who you were created to be.

We’d love to hear more about Mom Mentor.
I specialize in advice! Haha. I know it sounds a bit weird, but that is it! I love helping moms, parents, and couples put tools on the tool belt of their life and know how to use them.

But one of the biggest things I am proud of is this last Christmas we did a campaign for single moms. We know how financially stressful Christmas can be and the single moms who killed it by being the breadwinner and sole provider, so we, at Mom Mentor, wanted to make some single moms Christmas a blast. We raised thousands of dollars and got to surprise a number of single moms with an extra $1000 cash! It was beyond rewarding!

What sets us apart is we don’t shy away from difficult topics. We tackle how to affair-proof your marriage, the challenges of being a mom of a special needs child, overcoming depression, and how to effectively communicate through conflict with your spouse. And we have a lot of fun doing it! I think you will read our articles and listen to our podcasts and feel like we are your friends.

We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
I think the only barrier to female leadership is the limits we put on ourselves and in our mind. I am a firm believer that no one can limit my potential except me. If I give into the mindset that I can’t do something because I am a woman, then guess what, I won’t! The right doors will open at the right time when I am fully embracing who I am, going after the dreams in my heart, and trying not to compete with anyone else. There is always more room at the top.
