Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Tolson.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Sarah. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Hi! I started out in luxury, fine art portraiture 15 years ago. I still take a few select clients each year. That business morphed into finding a makeup line that was 98% natural, but also wouldn’t budge. That was such a major find for me in my business. I started incorporating this makeup with headshot sessions for businesswomen, or actors, and the feedback was incredible. So now, I split my time teaching ladies how to take great portraits or taking the headshots for them, why they need high-quality luxury makeup, and how the two blend so seamlessly together. My motto is that every women needs a great headshot, and a great lip color. 🙂
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have had to learn that I am not for everybody. Not everybody is going to get as excited as I do about portraits and luxury makeup. That’s ok. I am a plus size 40 something, and I just tell myself to stay brave and to keep putting myself out there. I believe there is enough room for all of us. And I believe kindness and integrity and going with your gut will always win.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Something Sarah Loves – what should we know?
The last few years, I’ve truly been on a mission to love myself just the way I am. And I have been vocal about it. That is reflected in my portrait work, my makeup sessions, etc. I shoot Fine Art portraiture all over San Diego, and I want each human in front of my camera to know their value, and to see how beautiful all of us are. 15 years of experience certainly helps. I am proud that when a client sees their portraits, their whole face lights up. They get to see how I see them… beautiful.
What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
Don’t quit. If something is hard, and you don’t exactly know what you are doing… study until you do. Intern under someone you admire. Take that class. Go to that conference. If your dream is really what you’re supposed to do, quitting will be the worst decision you could make.
