Today we’d like to introduce you to Sharlene Famisan.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Sharlene. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
To say that it is an honor to be featured in SDVoyager is an understatement. I have been living in San Diego since the age of nine. I attended SDSU as an undergrad and remembered always browsing through local magazines and thinking, “how awesome would it be to get featured in something”. At that time, I felt like I had nothing to offer and share. But life is a journey and when you allow it to unfold without any reservations, you discover your gifts and how it can contribute to society. And now I am so excited to share my story with you in this amazing platform! Thank you, SDVoyager!
I have always loved working in the mental health field. I have been a Psychiatric Nurse for eight years. I even went to school to get my Master’s Degree in Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. I was so determined that my next step was to become an NP because I felt that my way to contribute to the mental health community was to become more available. It was a difficult decision for me, but I decided to go down a different path and pursue my own spiritual business, Feel Good Vibes, which focuses on using Reiki healing.
So why the heck did I become a Reiki practitioner? Reiki has always been a practice that came up throughout my life. I had no idea what it was other than it is an energy healing modality that can be used with Western medicine. I remembered thinking how cool it was for a practitioner to be able to use their hands and just somehow allow the client’s body to help heal himself or herself.
About a year ago, I decided to take on 1:1 Spiritual Coaching from Shannon Taruc because I felt like I needed some direction in my life and a deeper connection to my spirituality. Through her coaching, I learned to listen to my higher self and aligning authentically with what makes my soul vibrate higher. I realized Reiki kept coming up in my life- understanding that most people have never heard of Reiki. I finally decided to take that leap and get certified as a practitioner. I didn’t do much research as to what happens during a Reiki course and attunement, so everything that unfolded after my training was self-discovery. I fell in love with how the light and love of Reiki can assist so much with healing body, mind, and spirit. I knew immediately that I wanted to share this practice with everyone because we tend to only focus on the physical, some mental, but neglect our spiritual/energetic body. I feel that it also ties into mental health because it allows my clients to release any stuck emotions or buried traumas. Energy healing for me has also allowed me to heal on a deeper level and letting go of feelings that no longer serves me.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Reiki showed up in my life a little over eight years ago. I feel like if it were a straight shot, I would have dived into it and started my Reiki practice then. But it obviously took some time and I believe I had many things to learn and grow through as I decided to commit and step into this role. Growing up, it was difficult for me to use my voice. I was taught to do as I’m told with no questions asked. I was always the passive one who would just agree to anything and everything to avoid any conflict or drama. Who would have thought those behaviors would affect us, as we got older?
2017- 2018 was a very stressful time for me. I was in grad school, having challenging times with my fiancé and parents, selling my condo and buying a new home. I felt so lost and detached that I decided to make a commitment in self-development and honoring myself with love and respect. I started going to therapy, which helped set the foundation of establishing boundaries for myself and with other people. It evolved to wanting to build a deeper connection with self and growing spiritually. I decided to experience energy healing, which was very life-changing for me. It showed me there is more to my life than what I see and experience in this 3D realm. It taught me to really honor myself and follow what is authentic to me. As life unfolded, I decided to take on a mentor to help keep me accountable.
What I learned is to be patient with things. If you feel called to do something that makes you feel happy and excited, don’t overthink it and just do. Don’t pay any attention to what others think, because the only person who knows what is truly best for you is yourself. It may not be an easy path, but those experiences are the most meaningful because you get to learn and navigate through them and as you evolve, you just become this pro at navigating your own life. Don’t settle because there is so much out there for you.
We’d love to hear more about Feel Good Vibes.
Feel Good Vibes was established to provide natural healing in a nurturing and loving environment. Our vision is to help people heal on all levels. I use Reiki healing as a way to facilitate healing and incorporate sound healing, oracle readings, and crystals during my sessions. I conduct sessions intuitively, as I am a claircognizance and clairsentience and receive messages to help guide clients when I am an open channel.
I am very committed to continued growth and learning so that I can create and hold space for my clients as they allow healing for themselves.
So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
I feel that women are viewed to only hold specific positions because of our ego-mind. The ego-mind is very fearful and comes from a masculine point of view. I feel that a woman can do anything her heart desires. All it takes is stepping out of that mindset that’s instilled because of fear. I love the fact that there are many women today rising and coming together to support each other.
