Today we’d like to introduce you to Sloane Wormser.
Sloane, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As a young girl, I always wanted to be a hairstylist but didn’t think it was an option for me. I was raised in the North East by two highly educated and successful parents, so I put a pressure on myself to go to college right after high school and get a degree. My goal was to be a pediatric nurse, but at the age of 18, I was not in the right head space to go college. High school was very difficult for me because my family moved from small town Massachusetts to Irvine California when I was 16 and the last thing I wanted to do was jump right into more school. After almost 2 years at Community College, I knew I needed a change. I wanted to do something that could make me money while being creative and social, so what better than becoming a hairstylist?! After talking to my parents and getting their full support, I enrolled at Paul Mitchell the School in Costa Mesa and my life has only improved since then! I have worked at salons in Los Angeles, San Diego, and Maryland, choosing a more challenging salon each time, I have been able to grow my career through saying yes to every opportunity and constantly pushing myself to go to the next level.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As a business owner, I have had a few struggles. The first being that the money I make has everything to do with the value other people put on me. That is a scary and very high-pressure feeling. Sometimes, I can take it very personally when I am having a dip in sales. The second struggle for me has been running a business while having a creative mind. It’s been very difficult for me to balance the “fun” work and the gritty details of owning a business, like taxes and quick books, inventory, and pricing, etc. One thing I have learned recently is to hire people to help! Even if your budget is tight, I know I can not do everything, and paying someone to get things organized has given me a serious piece of mind and relief.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Raven and Sage Collective – what should we know?
I am a hairstylist specializing in color. My main focus is blonding but I am comfrotable with any client that walks in the door. The style I am known for being my “Color melts” which allow the client to keep more of her natural root so that she has less maintenance between big appointments.
I would say though that besides my hair cuts and colors, people know me best for the experience they have behind the chair. As a hair stylist, I joke that I am really a therapist without the official degree. I take the relationship with my clients very seriously because I am spending 1-4 hours with them at a time. As a woman that has been through many trials a tribulation, mentally and circumstantially, I feel like I have a responsibility to share my knowledge of change, growth, and empowerment with my clients. I want every woman to feel like she is leaving happier, not just prettier.
Which women have inspired you in your life?
I know WAY too many inspiring women to answer this question without feeling like I am excluding everyone but I’ll answer my top 3:
1. My mom, Helen Wormser, has been my driving force my entire life. Her desire to be the best mother possible has guided me, supported me, and held my hand through every single trial as well as every victory. I could literally write a novel on how important this woman is to me. There is no one else in my entire life that I appreciate as much as her, and I look forward to always having the most solid relationship with her through every season of my life. Love you, mom!
2. My sister, Samantha Wormser, is one of the smartest and hardest working women I know. At the age of 25 she is already accomplishing more than many adults. Her work ethic is so strong and yet she is able to find a balance with having a boyfriend, eating healthy, exercise, social life, and managing a very successful Instagram/Blog while managing an extremely demanding full-time job. I have always been envious of her drive and will forever admire her for the strong, independent women that she is.
3. The owner of Raven and Sage, Andie Jones, has made a bigger impact on me that I think she will ever realize. This woman not only enhanced the loved for my career, but she has changed my life in terms of a new standard of what a woman and a leader should look like. Her strength, acceptance, support, and attitude have created a space for me and the other stylists that are unparallel to any boss I have ever had. Cannot thank this woman enough.
