Meet Trailblazer Stacy Woodard

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stacy Woodard.

Stacy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I always had an interest working with hair- usually my own or on my twin sister. In 2006 I graduated from Palomar Institute of Cosmetology and received my license. I began my hairstyling career at a shop called Three Sisters Salon in Oceanside and continued to work at a couple Paul Mitchell salons in the North County area.

After four years behind the chair, I took a couple of years off to focus on my two young children and do the mom thing for a bit. In 2013, I was hired on at Hair Body & Sol in Carlsbad and then transferred to their Vista location a year later to work full time behind the chair, while being a full-time mom.

Over the last five years, I’ve grown tremendously as a colorist. I have realized my passion is for painting hair! Balayage and hair color are my favorite. Even better, get to meet all kinds of amazing people every day and help them feel good about their hair. I am currently working in Encinitas at Studio Feathers Hair Lounge as a Master Stylist.

I absolutely love this industry as it offers so much flexibility to my everyday schedule. I also have a set of six-month-old twins, so juggling four kids and a career can be challenging but so rewarding. I have found a balance between doing what I love and the family life.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Starting in this industry is tough. It does take a good year or two to build a strong clientele base. For me, it wasn’t until the second half of my 12-year career, when I finally had a strong clientele and a solid grasp on the chemistry of hair color. Yep, that’s right. Understanding the chemistry of hair color did not come easily to me.

Through trials and ups and downs as well as a few strong mentors along the way, hair color is now my favorite! I do love a good project! Some advice for anyone starting out in the hair world is to find yourself a mentor and study them, their work, and ask questions! Also, find an assisting position so you can learn the ways of salon reality.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Hair By Stacy W – what should we know?
I am passionate about balayage aka hair painting, and I specialize in blonding. Most of my work includes, but not limited to, ombre and shadow root blondes. Something that sets me apart from others is that I’m a fabulous listener! Giving my clients a thorough consultation is key to providing the best service and achieving desired results.

I can honestly say that I am proud of how far I’ve come in a short period of time. Putting in long hours at the salon, handing out my cards to strangers and entering a hair color competition have helped get me where I’m at today with my brand Hair by Stacy W.

Which women have inspired you in your life?
There are several women who’ve inspired me along the way. First is my mother. Growing up, I watched her raise my sister and I (twins) while my dad was deployed for the Marine Corps. She has shown me the value of hard work and always remaining humble with what we have.

My first mentor Jessica Woods creates amazing hair color! I would watch her do hair while I worked at the reception desk when I was first starting out. She is another woman who puts in those long days and long hours to get it done.

Another inspirational woman is Beth Whitfield. She would help dissect any haircut I had questions about and help me understand color theory if I was stumped. She is a woman of many talents, to include teaching and mentoring, is a salon owner, and still manages to have time to work behind the chair! I don’t know how she does it all, but that alone is inspiring!
